13 x 38 Tire Match

I am trying to find a 13 x 38 tire to match a good existing tire on my 666.  I tractor salvage guy told me 14.9 x 38 and 13 x 38 are the same sized tire.  Can anyone confirm?  The tire has 13 x 38 on it, not 13.6 x 38.

Looked for a chart for you, google being it's usual useless self! Then I thought M.E. Miller tire had a chart on their page, they may, I haven't found it. Your salvage guy is correct, 13 crosses to 14.9. 12's would cross to 13.6, 11 to 12.4. 14 to 16.9. 15 to 18.4.

Good luck finding a 14.9x38, think they are a little like hens teeth!

That is an OLD OLD tire. Older than the tractor. Manufacturers went from the 13-38 size system to the 14.9x38 size system in the 1950's. Your tractor came along almost 20 years later.

14.9x38 are still manufactured. You could get new ones if that was the goal, but I suspect that it isn't. The hard part is finding a good, reasonably priced, USED tire. With the price of tires these days tractor owners are running them until the air is showing.

A friend is looking for used 13.6x38 tires.

He gets a lot of laughs from the tire dealers when he asks.

His first mistake is asking tire dealers for used tires. They don't have any. They don't want to deal with that. If the tire has any value left the farmer keeps it. They only want to let the junk tires go so they don't have to dispose of them.

You only find good used tires out in the wild. It's like deer hunting.

Like others have said, good used tires like that are going to be hard to find. 14.9 tires were never common in my area to begin with and there would be even less call for them now. I bought a new Firestone Traction Field and Road 10 years ago in that size for $700 I think. No telling how much they are now or if you can get one any time soon.

A pair of 15.5's might be a better route to take. Much more common.

13.6-38 was the factory size on the Farmall M.

Thank you for all the input.  I do have access to a 14.9 tire, so thanks for the tire chart information.  If I put the 14.9 on my tractor, I then end up with two 13.6 tires.  I live south of KC, but the family farm in central Iowa by Winterset is where the tires are located.

not really, most M tractors came new with 11x38 which would be 12.4x38 early ones were mostly narrower yet.

Dad's '51 M came new from FARMALL with General 12-38's, with the check mark shaped lugs that a Super M in IH advertising got photographed with. I "think" they may still be around the farm the folks lived on, they were our direct axle duals from about 1961 to 1972. Were used on the SM-TA, and '51 M one spring catching up on plowing running backwards, and the 450, and with a change of hubs used on the 4010.

    The actual  change from the 12-38 size to 13.6x38 size,  tires were the exact same, just where width was measured was changed from tread surface (old measurement) to cross section at widest point of the tire (new measurement) occurred spring of 1954. Our SM-TA had the Farmall installed Good Year Super Sure Grip 45 degree lug tires, were marked 12-38's.
