acem
I need to replace the muffler on my 1486. It is developing small holes and is about to fail. It's a 4 post canopy so I want a muffler. I have noticed two styles. One is black and the other is silver. What's the difference? The muffler on the cih parts site is similarly priced to the aftermarket. Any opinions on which muffler to get? I plan to replace the elbow and pipe too. I wish these parts were available in stainless... Thx-Ace

Neighbor did it to his 1086. Only seen it from the road. Need to get a closer look to see how clean a job he did.

acem
I think a truck manifold/turbo setup would make it easier to convert it to side exhaust.

Not sure how he did it and if that is what he used.

Just seen one the other day with a truck manifold on it to put the corner exhaust on it

Matt Kirsch
I've been looking around mufflers all my life. Don't know if I could function on a tractor without some sort of stack sticking out of the hood. It's hard enough with these tractors that have the muffler under the hood. That little pipe almost disappears! What really has me scratching my head are these farmers that have the entire right hand window full of screens and monitors, but wail and moan over a little pipe sticking up out of the hood.
acem
Actually I'm planning to put back the original style muffler on it. Any thoughts on the silver vs black mufflers? In the past I've had both kinds with mixed results. Hopefully the used one ksfarmdude has works out. If not I get a new one. Thx-Ace
Matt Kirsch
Only thought I have is, one is silver, one is black. Given the state of today's aftermarket I doubt if there is much difference between the two except paint color. It would not surprise me to find out that both were made on the same overseas assembly line, just painted different colors. Your "mixed results" with both kinds is very telling.
acem
I've used 06-66 mufflers both aftermarket and factory. I've had some with good high heat black paint and some silver coating last a long time. I've also had similar looking ones rust out quickly. So obviously there are differences but I don't know what it is... I've never replaced the muffler on a turbo 86 series before. Yeah it doesn't bother me to look around one pipe. I'm sure I'd burn my hand if I put the pipe on the corner of the cab.

Nah, the door opens forward, blocking the pipe.
