MinnesotaFarmall
Does anyone know without a doubt, no b.s. factual who made the third members for them? Seems it is a gm axle, but a montage of other parts.
bitty
@Ed Leaman might have an idea who did
MinnesotaFarmall
Seems like they used a combination of their own proprietary parts, plus over the counter parts. Numbers off of the ring gears I have come back to nothing over the counter. Google, parts books, etc do not have matching numbers. How many ring and pinion ratios we're available? Were the transfer cases available in different gearing? Does anyone make gears for the transfer cases?
brewcrew
Twenty years ago Trac Four (I believe they were the remnants of the original Elwood) could get basically anything you needed, but the transfer case parts were machined individually. And priced like a one-off part of course. It’s been a long time since I’ve heard of anyone doing business with Trac Four, so I doubt they are still in business. As much as I love an Elwood MFD axle, I wouldn’t want to farm with one anymore.
Matt Kirsch
Haven't checked lately but the IH parts books had all the gear tooth counts for the transfer cases on the old system. As I recall there were different ratios for 15XX tractors and 14-under tractors. CNH did restore SOME of the NLA parts so maybe they're there. jass1660
Can’t imagine Trac4 is still open. I was there in the early ‘90’s to get some parts and they hardly had any business then and they weren’t exactly young in age.
jnbru
I was told the Ring and Pinion are an old GM pattern that was discontinued the only aftermarket company who made them when out of business years ago. When I finial tracked a set down it cost me $2500 used. I the outside pinion bearing are also in limited supply. They are one directional... that's what killed the ring and pinion in my axle. That bearing set me back around $270 new. These are 10 year old prices now. I still have a used bearing but it loose. 1
DR.EVIL
When ever I talked to anyone at Elwood about axles, they ALWAYS said everything from hub to hub and out to the drive yoke on the input pinion came from SPICER in Minnesota. Only person I ever knew at Spricer was my old Boss at FARMALL got his picture on the cover of Purchasing Magazine about 1990 being Purchasing Manager at that Spicer plant after the Farmall plant closed. Torque
The center section is an Eaton H110. I do not know who made them, GM used them in army trucks from about 1939 on and in commercial 1 1/2 ton trucks. Up to 1979 they were still used in some motor home chassis. Army trucks were 6.17 or 6.72 ratio, I think Elwood used a commercial truck ratio. The steering knuckles are army truck and the planetaries were designed and built by Spicer and adapted (by them I assume) to the army truck axle. The army truck always used Bendix steering joints but the Elwood (at least the one I had apart) had the much improved Rzeppa joints, may have been part of the Spicer modification.
MinnesotaFarmall
The ring and pinion I have in ours is a 4.88, that's where a lot of confusion came from when I went to look for parts. Seems everyone I talked to said that there are no options available for a 4.88. I'd be willing to bet that is what took mine out.
MinnesotaFarmall
Just adjusted backlash on another mfwd of ours and it is a 5.43 ratio. I'm thinking that's what our 1086 should have instead of a 4.88.

R190
Elwood had two different series axles back in the day the Elwood axle as formerly used by IH which was mostly Spicer and their own components and the T-4 which we were told had a GM carrier and unique wheel hubs. There was about $4000.00 difference in dealer cost back in the mid 80s between the two. I misplaced my manuals and price book from back then so I have very little more I can add.
MinnesotaFarmall
Found this in our original owners manual for our 1586, thought it was neat.
