IHhogfarmer
This fall I will be transferring down to West Texas A&M University in Canyon, Texas which is about 15 minutes south of Amarillo. Dumas is 45 minutes north of Amarillo. Passing through Dumas on our way down I found this building that appeared to once be an IH dealer mainly because of the pylon so I looked it up on ihdealerspast and sure enough the address listed was the dealer I saw. It’s now a car dealership but on our way back home I wanted to get a picture. Any Texans know this one back in it’s hay day?
Long Farms
This 1456 sold new at Oglesby IH in Hereford. They had store in Hereford and Dumas. Were still CIH till 10 years or so ago. The son still has an equipment dealership in Dumas. 3

We go by that old dealership all the time but Oglesby has a new place just north of the old place on the other side of the road , they basically are a short line dealership now .

Yes we saw that place going through Dumas, we had also stopped at the John Deere dealer Western Equipment. Neat place. I’ll be going through Stratford serval times the next couple years, we’ll have to meet some time!

Thanks I was happy to find it. I also found another dealer building in Amarillo, there was an M wide front on the lot. No pictures tho. God, I love that country, as it more than offsets ALL of the trees in East Texas.. Or, take a couple of days to get down to the Coastal Bend, around Victoria (rice) and Corpus Christi, (milo, cotton and corn). Jim Hays was my grandfather. At the same time the Hereford store was sold to Cecil Oglesby, my grandfather bought out his brother, A.C. (Charlie) Hays’ interest in the Dimmitt store. My father later bought & operated the Dimmitt store until 1993 when it was sold. That was during the time Case was ‘urging’ dealers to consolidate. Calvin Wood at C&H Equipment in Muleshoe purchased the store and it’s still there (BARELY). Dealers in the panhandle lost LOTS of market share when Case entered the picture. That, coupled with Case’s decision to walk away from the stripper cotton market pretty much killed red equipment on the southern panhandle/south plains region. I remember growing up the red/green split was slightly more than 50% red. Today I would estimate it’s more than 90% green.

The southern panhandle area has changed dramatically in the past 10-15 years. In that time dozens of dairies have moved into Castro, Parmer, & Eastern NM. In Castro alone, the dairies have bought out a very major portion of farmland. I’d be willing to bet that 75%+ of the land is now chopped for dairy feed. acem
Dad was born in El Paso TX. He had cousins who farmed some good ground on the southern plains. Of Texas. There was a father, mother and two sons. A son was killed by lightning on a tractor. The mother had a fit and made them quit farming. They turned ranching. The other son and father were killed by lightning on horseback in another storm. The mother lost her mind. I don't know many specifics about this story but it is part of my family oral tradition. Landmarks like: The Allis-Chalmers 4WD, with the blade plow, that had, and may still be setting on the west side of 287, between Lamar and Springfield, for years, seemingly not been moved The IH Emeryville semi tractor that has set in Boise City, OK, on the east side of 287 for as long as I can remember, and long before they built the loop around town.. The Farmall 1206 with a set of drills that has (still?) sets right on the TX-OK state line at Kerrick, TX., which has NOT moved for at least 20 years. To see if the custom forage harvester operation just south of Strattford, TX is still in business, (Also to see if the truck that was blocking the fuel island at the Shell truck stop in town, is still there) And, there was/is an IH straight truck with a grain box on the east side of 287 on the north end of Dumas, pretty much across from the JD dealership, that has seemingly not moved for a few years. Oh yes! At the moment I recall the AC and on the opposite side of the road (still in CO I think) there is a Massey-Ferguson 4wd sitting. Also the 1206 that had big heavy rear wheel weights. There is also an IH drill sitting close to there too. I don’t recall the truck in Dumas but across from the Dumas JD dealer there are some buildings. So unless I missed something I didn’t see it.
