New to me 1586(hopefully will be able to post pics).  I want to change it it to dual PTO.  If I understand right there are two ways, cut and weld coupler for input shaft or change back cover and add 540 shaft to the original 1000 only PTO.  Is either way preferred or easier or is it a toss up?  I have a donor dual PTO from a 856.  TIA

We used an older PTO, had the coupler made up and converted the linkage to control the PTO from push to pull or maybe vice versa. Just got the extra parts from a salvage yard. It has been at least ten years and working like a champ, good luck.

If you get the shaft out of a late 9 or 1086, it will have small spline on the front and the big spline on the back. If you flip it around, you can use the 856 pto in a 15. Have to change of the linkage to pull style also.

Pull the input housing and shaft off both the 1566 and donor 856 PTO.  Bolt the 1566 housing and shaft onto the 856 dual speed unit.  Now you can use your original input shaft.  No cutting or welding required.
