acem
The rear axle bearings on my 74 loadstar were originally packed with grease and had a sealing ring thing on the outer axle nut. The seal has been removed and the bearings now run in oil. The axle shaft had some type of sealant when I removed it but it is so thin I can't decide what it was. I am guessing silicone rtv or anaerobic gasket maker. What is recommended for sealing axle shaft flanges? Thx-Ace
int 504
They used to have paper gaskets but now it's silicone. I like the grey stuff for those.
bitty
Flange sealant loctite 515 that CNH uses is pretty good and works as a locktite also for things that commonly work loose
Mr. Plow
515 is good stuff for sure...

vtfireman85
Not totally familiar with the application, but for successful gasket making i have been using “the right stuff” from permatex, I really like it and it is oil ready by the time you get the bolts tight. Comes in a cheese whiz can. https://www.permatex.com/products/gasketing/black-gasket-makers/permatex-the-right-stuff-black-1-minute-gasket-maker-5-oz/

Paystar5000
We just use black silicone. I tried the paper gaskets but that was not a success lots of them leaked. The loctite 515 would problem work but have never used for this application it so I can’t give an opinion

Not saying the weren’t on 74 and later but almost every brand then used the oil lubed bearings. All the trucks I have seen them on were early 50s trucks. acem
Oops. It's a 75, not a 76. My other loadstar is a 74. It has a RA30 rear axle. The truck has a 19,700lb gvw with the original 8.25x20 tires. Below is a pic from the service manual. Mine has the seal ring removed from the outer nut. Thx-Ace Not that it wouldn’t be used on other hubs but yours does have the five bolt buds. That’s the hubs all the trucks with greased bearings I have seen them on. Seems like all the mid to late 60s and later ih trucks up here had Dayton 5 spoke wheels. Chevy and others had buds early on then went to their 10 bolt or , Dayton wheels then the others had the newer more bolt budd wheels. Learn something new everyday. That they still offered those greased bearings later.
acem
Actually mine has Daytons. The pic Is from the service manual. Mine is similar but the sealing ring has been removed. I'll get pics of mine tomorrow. Thx-Ace

Either way its anaerobic. That's what I'd use. Great stuff. Seems like 518 might be better for aluminum as well as steel. Like you said similar specs.
