Best first line of a song?

Sledgehammer

The sirens are screaming and the fires are howling
Way down in the valley tonight
There's a man in the shadows with a gun in his eye
And a blade shining oh so bright
There's evil in the air and there's thunder in sky
And a killer's on the bloodshot streets
Oh and down in the tunnel where the deadly are rising
Oh, I swear I saw a young boy down in the gutter
He was starting to foam in the heat

after a very long instrumental intro

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they called 'gitche gumee'
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of November turn gloomy
With a load of iron ore twenty-six thousand tons more
Than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty
That good ship and crew was a bone to be chewed
When the gales of November came early

This one has my vote, I've 'liked' many but this song has always given me goosebumps, still does.

Gordon Lightfoot makes you feel like you lost a family member in that wreck

If you ever go back into Wooley Swamp son you better not go at night
There's things out there in the middle of them woods
That'd make a strong man die from fright

Echos-Pink Floyd

(imho this is one of their best tracks)

I think we are tuned in to the same frequency.

Wow, some great songs mentioned! Seeing CDB mentioned, you gotta love "Stroker Ace Was Born To Race", along with "Devil went down to Georgia", but if you want to get the party started, Sir Mix A Lot, "I Like Big Butts and I cannot Lie" lol! I love music from country, to hard rock, to grunge, to classic rap lol! I really don't care for much new country or pop! My play list may go from Metallica, to Beastie Boys, to Alabama, to Alice in Chains, to VanHalen, to CDB, to Run DMC, to Motley Crue, to Styx!

“Arnold Layne had a strange hobby”

Arnold Layne-Pink Floyd

I prefer the David Gilmore era Floyd but this version of that song with David Bowe is fantastic with Gilmore and Rick Wright on the outside chance you haven't seen it Lars

I was fortunate enough to see Pink Floyd twice.

Now, many many years ago
When I was twenty three
I was married to a widow
Who was pretty as could be
This widow had a grown-up daughter
Had hair of red
My father fell in love with her

I’m my own grandpa

Willie does my favorite version

I saw them about 20 years ago

 couple more of theirs

Signs-

And the sign said
"Long-haired freaky people
Need not apply"

I'm a Stranger Here

Well I'm a stranger here in this place called Earth
And I was sent down here to discover the worth
Of your little blue planet third from the sun
Come on and show me what you've done

Last night as I was out a ridin’
graveyard shift, midnight ‘till dawn
the moon was as bright as a readin’ light
for a letter from an old friend back home

Chorus:
He asked me why do you ride for your money
Why do you rope for short pay
You ain’t getting’ nowhere
And you’re losin’ your share
Boy, you must have gone crazy out there

this song popped into my head reading another thread where @sandhiller and @mike newman were discussing “fly over country”. The first lines of the chorus is the great part.

Some of the better stuff from the '80s, IMO.
