best repower for 706?

I have no bad words for my D310, have plenty for my D282s. Gasser I would just go 301 and be done with it. All the gassers drink fuel none will sip like a D282.

what are the plans? working it or pulling a hay rake?

Take off the steering wheel, roll the rest out and roll an 806 in it's place, put the steering wheel back on the 806.    Ok, there, you got it.

I'd like to repower mine with a Bobcat tracked skid steer.

360, 414, 436, or 466 with 1066 frame rails and rear plate. Takes a few more factory made parts than that but the worst part is a possible need to lengthen the hood .

312 / 360 is a few inches shorter (maybe 3 or 4?).

I would stick to a a gas motor unless you want to spend a lot of time and money. 706 are to short height wise and length wise for a 400 series with out a fair amount of work. It can be done, but if you want it to look nice it will take a lot of work. The pictures are of my 806 that started as an LP.

I to would just re-gas engine it. My son and I are still dinking on our 806 to DT436 conversion as time allows. A lot of monkeying around and the 806 is longer and taller. Its all the little things. I had to move the lower radiator neck. Find and air cleaner that fits. Would have been easer to use a non-turbo D436. Just time consuming. I have a 706D that the D301 I put in years ago cracked a ring or something. Oil pours out the breather tube along with a LOT of blowby. I am even thinking about putting in a C301 I have laying around.

We now live in a world where an engineless hulk goes for a little under 3,000 dollars?

Until it has "SOLD" on it, it has gone nowhere.

As for which engine, whatever you can find. If you try to go with a specific engine they will dry up and you won't be able to find one, or you'll spend way more than the tractor is worth. Easiest/cheapest would be a 6-cylinder gasser, then a D282 or D301. German diesels you're looking for the adapter plates and you run into parts supply issues. American 300 series is just a needle in a haystack. When you get into the 400 series now you're shoving 10lbs of sugar into a 5lb bag.

Would nice if you just needed a new engine to replace one that let go

With that tractor you will be missing all ginger bread to make it run.

Good candidate for some green new deal money in the form of a government grant to repower to electric

With right project grant wording you might be able to get a Solar system for your property.

And maybe a big CAT generator on a trailer to recharge it when it runs out out juice in the field.

This actually isn’t the dumbest idea I’ve ever heard.  Gut as much of the driveline as needed, stuff a suitably large electric motor in the TA/speed trans area, fill the engine area with batteries.  Use it on a mixer wagon or some such daily operation.  Use shore power during mixing and the batteries to unload.

Other than that, its a 706 with no engine.  I would look long and hard at it, shake my head, then go looking for a 766 if I wanted a tractor of that size.

There was one on the local marketplace had a 310 they said was out of a combine and a turbo for about twice as much I tried finding it again it a couple days ago no luck, their was a very clean one with a 263 a month a go for around 4000 I can't find it again either but it was for sale for a while, unless you where just wanting that as a project around here it's cheaper to buy a running one, if it was me i'd look for a DT360 if I couldn't find that a 5.9 cummins, it be a lot more money but that's just a project i've been wanting to do for a long time

plenty of options out there for repowers just depends on what you want to do - no shortage of items on places i frequent but honestly by the time you spend a grand for a motor and not knowing what you are into would it be better to get something running and make a good decision when buying it?

its all relative to the money pit of either venture - we all know how that goes
