And don't y'all act for one minute like you've never used a 5 gallon hydraulic oil bucket for diesel fuel!

🤣

Nope, not yet , I use the cans with the fake vents you drill into them, and the nozzles leak horrendously 🤔

You mean no one has stole fuel ( some one forgot to check the bulk  tanks) from the 86 to put in the 66 in on a Sunday morning to finish feeding. Just set the yellow bucket under the drain valve in front of the inside left rear wheel?

Alittle tlc and some radial tires make a nice tractor in my opinion. And I have green ones too

someone in a Facebook group posted about restoring a 86 with a year around cab a couple weeks ago and some people let their heads come unscrewed backwards over it

The 86 series are by far my preferred tractor, especially the Hydro 186, I have three of them, two of them have loaders.

I just bought my third 786 with a factory cab and loader that will be installed on my third Hydro 186.

 I have a 886 986 1086 and a 1486 that I just finished a two-year restoration on!
I also have a 3088 four-wheel-drive factory open station but has a aftermarket cab, I plan on removing the cab and leaving it original or maybe try to find a factory cab to put on it in the future. I also have a 3288 and a 3688 that I restored in 2018. When I do restorations on the tractors they get Michelin Agri bib tires, LED lights, the AC gets fixed and I put a few improvements of my own on them. I make extra handles on the doors which makes it easier to get in and out and to close the doors from the inside and I also put gas springs on them to hold the doors open when getting in and out. I’ve also fixed up the rear windows so they are more like modern tractors that have the gas springs on the rear windows, I never liked the original slide and latch system on them! Good radial tires with the proper air inflation makes them ride so smooth compared to overinflated bias tires! I can sit in those tractors all day just like my 7120 magnum, MX 220 or MX maxxum. Most of the work I do with them is in the hay, I no longer grow any crops so the tractors only get used mostly during the summer. Some of them don’t have AC but a good fan in the cab along with the original blower with just the side windows open is bearable on the hottest summer days.
I find those tractors very simple to figure out and fix them, a clutch for example can be done in 10 hours.

I also have a couple of 2+2s

Since you all like pictures I can post a bunch, I will start with my 1486, The last picture will be of the 1486 when I bought it in 2017. The second last picture is of my 786 with an aftermarket cab that will be removed.

LMAO!
Well Dale…(I’m Dale too) I’m missing a 1586, I know you have one so you are my hero too! Lol
I  started in 2008 when I bought the first Hydro 186, Then in 2011 I bought the 986, 1086 I bought in 2012, the 886 I bought it in 2013, 3688 was 2014, my first 786 with the ROPS in the spring of 2017, 1486 end of August 2017, my second Hydro 186 October 2018, 3088 April 2019, my third Hydro 186 in May 2019, The second 786 with an aftermarket cab in April 2020, my 3588 2+2 July 2020, my 3388 November 2020, 3288 April 2021 and the third 786 last week. I’m still looking for 1586, I’ve looked at a few in the past couple of years but the prices have gotten a little bit too high for me! Someday the right one will come along at the right price for me!

Pretty simple really, I use half inch rod and a bandit into the shape and then weld four tabs on it to bolt it to the original holes in the glass and on the hinge then I install to gas Springs and build my own latch. Then I weld a catch onto the tubing at the base of the window. I built one a couple of years ago for one tractor and I’ve been testing it out and I decided that it works perfect and I am in the process of making more and I will change all my tractors to that style in the future.
Here is some pictures of the first one I made

I like the 86's. We got 66's, and don't get me wrong, I like them, but I'd rather spend my day in the 86 series cabs. I guess I'm kind of biased because I grew up behind the seat in the 3788, so that cab is sort of like a home to me. I like our 1486 so much that we bought a project one to fix up. And a parts one. So I guess we got 3 now lol. If I had unlimited money I'd buy every 86 I saw for sale lol

Me too

I honestly didn't know 86 series were bad until the internet. I for sure would take one over a 66 series.  My opinion only, the reason for the 86 series supposedly mediocre reputation is more because of what it had to go up against.  The old saying in my neck of the woods is IH was always a generation behind JD after 1960 at least until the 88 series.  The 66 series for sure and the 86 series somewhat were a step side ways for IH.

Very true!
I think the 86 series cab should’ve been on the 66 series tractors!

Can you imagine how awesome the 88 series would be with the magnum powershift transmission!

I've always said that everything should have been bumped a generation ahead. The 66 series would have never seen the light of day in my world. 86 series in 71. 88 series in 76 and a powershift version in the late 70s or early 80s.

That is 100% what IH should have attempted to do.

I couldn't stand the 66 series outhouse cabs I hated those things hard to get in and was so big inside it felt like you were driving a large box and when the 86 series started the cabs felt a little to small  wasn't many places to put a cooler or waterjug unless it was under your feet rolling around or getting in the ways of the pedals And forget having another person inside riding, Having access to the controls eliminated that idea

Power wise a 1086 is right there power wise. Hood styling is the same for the most part, other than the fuel tank not being in front of you. Drive train for all intents and purposes was pretty much the same.

It was the cabs that sucked. End of story. You skipped this series with a better cab. It would have been well received. Think about it. 86 series in 71. Deere didn't have the birdcage Sound Guard cab until 73. We would have had a run with them I feel.

I ran a 1466 with a Deluxe for a number of years when I was growing up. Tractor would pull a house down but that cab made it less than pleasant to operate it. I blame some of my hearing loss on running that tractor.  And getting in and out of it at 6 foot 4 inches. Get in the door, bend over so I don't hit my head. Then move sideways around the center console while stepping over either the clutch or the brakes to get to the seat. A 86 series has never been that awkward to enter, no matter what anyone says. The last time I was in one I was a lot thinner than I am now so entertaining on probably hasn't gotten any better in my world with age.

The 66 series for sure and the 86 series somewhat were a step side ways for IH.

i agree I never heard anyone bad mouth a cab on an 86 and even go far as say a 66 cab was better till youtube and facebook.

I know all about those red "deluxe"cabs, owned several and have one now that will come off just because it's shot, rusted out ac gone. They were by far in my opinion a detriment not a plus. But I also never owned a brand new one.Hard to see out of,get in,loud.I have one 10 with a Diamond or High Clear cab and I like it much better but still behind those crappy Sound Guard( good for that Era but not now).

But the whole idea of 66 series with all their pluses as a FENDER tractor verse a rops or fender 86 series,66 wins hands down.

At that point forward most people unless they were cheap or were looking for something without a cab because of some sort of clearance issue. They weren't looking for a open platform tractor to run as the main field tractors. The cab was becoming a major selling point. In today's world you get above utility tractors try to find a ROPS model that you don't special order. Try to buy a Magnum in open station. Heck was that a option beyond the 7100 series?

Plus put it this way. The 66 series never happened. You wouldn't have known any better.

That's a pretty naive comment. If the letter series never "happened" we wouldn't have known any better either, etc etc.  All tractors evolve and the evolution of the wet sleeve 400 series  engine as a mainstay power plant for IH tractors started in the 66 series. Why not just jump from the 66 series to the 88's or better yet the Magnums which had it all.Cabs are the only thing 86s have over the 66s in mine and many others. I would own 1086 again just wouldn't climb on it first unless it was bitterly cold out and it had a nice cab to plow the driveway. My only 86 I really like to add is a 186 to add to my other hydros.

Other than power plant what was different between the 66 and 56 series drive train wise. Shifted the same way. There wasn't a heck of a lot of evolution there other than engine. Letter series was evolution of more gearing and style so there was a bigger step there.

In my world there would have been a bigger step from the 56 series to the 86 series. Rather you admit it or not. Operator comfort was becoming a big thing. The 66 series lacked that. in the cab form
