Nebraska1206
The front axle we all know as the '1456 front axle' was offered as a heavy duty axle option for the rest of the 26/56 series tractors after the introduction of the 1456. It was also later the front axle that was offered for 66/86 series tractors if the tractor was ordered with the wet bolster (in order to install a NF on the tractor) Have any of you seen, or have, any other 26/56 series tractor that was/is equipped with this axle option? Once in a while a 66 series tractor will come up with this axle, but I'm more curious about a 26/56 series, other than the 1456.

Dan Robinson
I added one to my 806. Just for a cool factor. It needed a LOT of work, but the price was right. I know where there's a 1026 carcass that has one under it. 5
1480x3
So what is it really about this axle that makes it stronger than an 856 axle, Yes i see the visual differences but is it stronger steel, thicker, better design in the "wishbone" ? Spindles or tie rods bigger ? Is it rated to carry more weight ? I have a couple wheel brg kits hanging on shop wall that fit a list of IH tractors, will have to see if 1456 is on list. Just curious if it really is stouter by any substancial amount, or just different to set 1456 apart from the rest ?
Nebraska1206
The diameter of the axle knee tubes is larger, it's the same diameter as a 66 series knee. Except the pin goes through the 1456 style knee at a 45 degree angle instead of vertical like a 66 series. Spindles and arms, as well as wheel bearings are the same. The axle pivot pin on the 1456 style axle is larger diameter, it's the same pin used for the axle pivot pin on the Coleman MFD axle. Then of course the axle pivot bolster is larger, and the welded wishbone adds strength as its one less piece to come loose if its welded solid rather than held on with large jam nuts. So it has its structural improvements
