I have an 86 hydro which is basically a 666 with a hydro. Super handy tractor, I keep finding things it’s great for. Great for all that jobs that one of the big tractors is just too much.

86 Hydro was in the 86 series. Hydro 70 was in the 66 series range.

Not sure what is being said here. Were there any mechanical differences between a Hydro 666, Hydro 70 and Hydro 86?

Almost no changes, other than a turn signal on the 86 and a shift to the D310 midway through the production run.

They are the little tractor that could.   Lots of power in a small package.  I love mine!  The shifters can get worn and need attention in the dash. Brakes need adjusted from time to time. Otherwise,  very trouble free machines.

The straight pipe and pyrometer tell me that one has a windmill on it.  Is it yours?

A guy would have to be careful with the fuel screw for sure.

Alan and Sledge, there's little if no difference between the 666 and 686, right?

I’m almost positive the drivetrain is the same.   You could also get a German diesel in a 686

Very little I know of besides some cosmetics.

Later 686 got the German diesel. I wanted the IH 312 but there is nothing wrong with the german.

As someone said, my 86 has turn signals, I don’t think the 66 had them. Mine also has the 312. I don’t have any experience with the German engines, just glad I don’t have one, now. (Parts availability)

Mine has the IH 312, good engine, mine blows quite a bit of smoke out the draft tube at idle, but cleans up once you up the rpm’s. Also doesn’t like the cold, have to make sure it’s close to an outlet to plug in the heater in the winter, then it starts fine….

I have a Hydro 70 with the 312.Bought it used almost 20 years ago and puffed like a dragon out the blow by tube.Worried me it was ready to blow and I got stuck. But never did anything else smoke, steam, heat or whatever it is.No oil to speak of comes out.Tractor starts great in hot or cold weather with good batteries, is my winter snow plow tractor. Great motor other than very loud and noisy.I must wear ear plugs, even bought a brand new muffler years back from IH when I bought it, never did a thing.

Yes, that is my 666, that I refer to as "Lucy".  She has an M&W turbo with pyrometer and a Thomure chrome stack.  I have never had it on a dyno, but she sure blows black smoke when you crack the throttle!  My favorite tractor for parades and tractor rides.   That photo was taken at the Roundup in DuQuoin.

The 666 and 686 have almost no difference between them.  Just the change from the 312 to the 310 German diesel during the 686 run. The stripes on the hood were updated to reflect the larger 86 series machines.

I'm sure I saw it then but didn't realize it was yours.  That's the roundup where we met, IIRC.

Indeed we did!

Hey, I IIRC'd!  Woohoo.  That's happening less and less these days.
