Old blacksmith/welding shop

Promised to take some pics for Sledge next time I was in here.   They still run lathes,  drill press, forge blower,  trip hammer,  and grinders off of line shafting.   In winter they fire up the coal forge and pound out batwing mower blades for sharpening.  Have oiled sand temper pit with hood and quench tank.  Place has been around forever...(five-ever, as my daughter says).  3 brothers and their father run it, father passed away last year at 99 or 100 years old.......like a trip back in time in there.    Where I get all my steel for projects.

Now THAT is cool. Takes a person back to a time when American knew how to get things done one way or another.  I love old places like that. Sometimes think i was born in the wrong time period.

These guys weld and fix everything.....field rig is a 1967 F100 Custom with a 300cid and an old school high back topper with a Miller Trailblazer in the back.....cool place.

That's great, owner lived to be 100, OHS would never allow a shop startup like that today, one of the last PowerPlants I worked in was 80 years old, still had ash pits in the lower level, new boilers fired on gas but there was one 1951 that you still has to fire manually, funnest plant of my career, very little automation all hands on, little working in an active museum

Thanks!  Place looks like a lot of fun. Great pics!  Those guys are probably a great wealth of knowledge.

I dream of coming across a place like that where things are for sale. I’ve been in a shop or two with line shafts. That Little Giant would be nice to have. That is the original setup. Most are set on an electric motor now for ease of use.  I’ve seen a couple sell but never when I had money to spend. I’d be like a kid in a candy store with all the tongs and smaller tooling also.

Be nice to walk into the whole shop, building and all and open up for business ( or hobby).

I would seriously consider throwing real money at something like that.
