Vt,Daona
This summer the original was lost. My local dealer has had no luck finding the correct one. It’s similar to CNH part #9701704 but the catches are much deeper. I found another 544 across town and he has the same tank and fuel cap on his tractor too. I’m adding the pictures. Thanks Quote Edited December 19, 2021 by Vt,Daona Pictures added
nepoweshiekfarmalls
I would think that it would be the same fuel cap that IH used from the letter series thru the 88 series. I was not aware of a second cap.

mmi
943 subs AM to the short ones https://www.ebay.com/p/76205851 had similar issue on case 4-5 different wrong subs so $$$
junkandcattle
Would not be surprised if it subs but CNH didn't show it
Matt Kirsch
Okay, to me the first (old) cap looks like it is missing the gasket, and the second cap is new and has the gasket. The fuel neck looks normal to me. Have you tried the standard triple baffle "tall" cap? I can't believe CaseIH is still selling the old "unsafe" ones... Those have been "banned" since the 1970's. Vt,Daona
Matt, I’d agree it’s hard to see but my neighbors 544 cap did indeed have a gasket. I’ve tried the Tall cap off my 1066 and it doesn’t fit. I’ll attach a picture of the neck on the 1066 and there a depth difference.
Vt,Daona
From my dealer I’ve tried, The short 389943r91 (junk and cattle mentioned) The tall 224839c92 (it fit my 1066 but not my 544) The 9701704 (which looks the closest but still doesn’t fit)
Eason
I don't remember any 544s around here having the short gas cap. I've only seen the tall ones.
junkandcattle
Your picture from original post appears to have the vent tube in the neck. I am wondering if there is bad stock in the parts system. I think everything with a vented tank in those days should accept the 389943R91 cap
Vt,Daona
Yes junkandcattle, the vent tube is built into the neck. I guess it’s worth a try ordering a 389943R91 from another dealer and seeing what happens.

Red Tech
I had the same problem about 6 months ago on a 504. They are a different cap from what will fit a B through 1466. That 504 also had a vent in the neck of the tank. IIRC, it was a short cap.
mmi
there is a definite difference in the distance of the ear locks to gskt ,has nothing to do with top height for this answer had the same issue on some case tanks and td radiators, one ended with a tab 68 chrysler cap https://www.ebay.com/itm/304261921248?hash=item46d76c79e0:g:wCgAAOSwp7FhtXhJ been 20 yrs since using the Ih tank bung repair tool ,IIRC it had to be set different/used carefully across the 20 odd we did https://www.ebay.com/itm/333600719215?hash=item4dac27016f:g:4-UAAOSwBSFewJd3 and the 5 g metal gas can/sets in, clip lock in funnel has several different heights
jass1660
I’d be concerned with how that tank looks on the inside on the 1066…
460
Yes most utilities used a non vented cap. My dad went though this on his 656. As you can see in the first picture posted the tube that acts as the vent. Don't send that cap in! You will not get it back! Your best bet is find a used cap off a utility 404, 504, 444, 544, 656 should be correct.
midnightman
Take a look at fillerneck.com. They may have one that is proper. Anything I’ve ordered from them comes quickly and was good quality

The free gas cap program doesn't want your old cap back.

Red Tech
I just re-bent the tabs in the fuel tank and on the cap to match together. I would have preferred to replace the cap, but the farmer needed the tractor back in a hurry. He had brought the tractor in for several other repairs, but the loose fuel cap was an afterthought.
