Tractor of the week # 36 544

Man, take off a day and everybody's posting pictures of my girl.  ha.

My dad bought this in '69 when I was 4yr old.  That pic's from this year.  Does a lot of raking, some post driving (the Shaver driver was put on it in about '73, I think -- I usually take it off if it's a long time between fencing, and it needs took off now).

Pop nearly traded the 544 in when he got a cab tractor of another color, and I told him let me buy it from him.  No, if I wanted it, he'd keep it here.  After he passed on, some really skilled fellows that had worked at a dealership for many decades near here some years ago went through the fuel system and really got it running great.

It'll be here at the estate sale when I go.  I told a young man at a equipment yard (that his dad owns) the same thing about Dad's old 12Valve Dodge , "It'll be at the estate sale when I go."  He said, "I'll be there."  Funny.

This has been for sale for some time. I don’t think anyone wants to use it as a paver anymore and it would be a lot of work to convert it back! Not mine.E971442F-AF7B-4C84-BD1D-63F0728328FA.thumb.png.0dd08998c9aa8c220a8d9aab046a5015.pngAF42A63D-61FC-40FE-82C3-9795DF30E226.thumb.png.dbeb191506261d0e94a25eaba98f6284.pngE465F1E7-5924-45C8-B40C-A5CB7F97C9A7.thumb.png.88a795d215870395235f3e80b2a141d4.png

sure is straight sheet metal for all the use it'd bound to have had.

the devil on one shoulder wants everything that's advertised, and the angel on the other shoulder points at all the stuff sitting around unused...

They a sweet tractor. We have a farmall diesel gear drive wide front version. Gets a 2250 tossed on it from time to time. Tackled many chores throughout the years and still does. She'll step up for many tasks. They do run a hair smaller brake disk and actuator than the bigger brothers 656/666/686 do but most other parts are the same. Does anybody have input on about what year they started switching from metal emblems to decals on hoods of 544? Ours is decals but I seen several with metal emblems?

I bought one of these pavers from a construction co. many years ago, Cheap. Plans were to strip the paver and set it up for side dressing corn in 20 in. rows. The construction  co. sold it as some work was needed and it was under powered. It took a day with a torch to get to the tractor part. A second day to get all the hyd components off. A trip to a local tractor salvage yard for a front bolster. A lot of work for sure.

They want to much for this one, but I wonder how much money there would be in scrap.

Ron I believe it was late 71 when they switched to decals along with the introduction of the 66 series.

what cab?

Looks like a Year A Round to me.

Speaking of which, my grandfather had a 544 with a Year A Round cab which was old on his estate auction back in May 1989. I think it was a Farmall but it had 16.9x30 rears on stamped steel wheels. It might have been a Utility but I think it had bar axles and I don't recall the front axle being swept back.

I haven't got that far in my head yet let's see what the guys here think

The cab is definitely unique on it but I understand taking it off, more work that it’s worth. I think it would be neat to leave it the color it is when restored.

I'll throw a few of mine in here. Mines a Diesel Hydro. I really like the tractor. I wish it started a little easier but plugged it it starts just fine. Handiest tractor around here in my opinion.

It had a wide front when I bought it but I swapped my narrow front over from my gas 544.

I tend to agree on the color I like that bright Yellow hard to find parts for that model and the cab would be too hot in the summer
