Starter is going out of my 686 diesil. Got a 104206a1 from the dealer dont look anything like the original. And it dont fit its longer and alittle bigger around. And it hits the ta housing. So it wont lay flat against the mounting flang. Anyone else deal with this?

there is a thread running on here about a similar situation just a few pages back. Might as well jump in there with your request.

if you still have the original the good folks here would like to know the tooth count on your bendix gear and possibly the number off the original starter itself.  or casting number off of the nose cone. if they have them, for the one that works and the one that doesn't fit.

Is there a reason that you just couldn't have taken your old starter and have it rebuilt ? I have never bought a starter from a dealer in any of my motors, cars, trucks, dozers tractors, skid loaders etc.I always just have them rebuilt at starter/alternator shop.

just recently had starter on 1066 redone, as said earlier since going to starter shops so far we have never had to buy on, last repair the ammeter needle was going down when starting, suspected, solenoid, could not get it off at home, finally took whole starter to repair shop, first time repair guy said the solenoid was wierd on the inside, took apart turned the armature , fixed it overnight 112 dollars, we have benefited from the guys moving here to wis. from out east,

The new starter they sold you is for a d358. I can tell by looking at it. Just salvaged a 686 w/d310 and 826 and had starters side by side. Youd think they would be the same but are not. New starter might be also for a D310 but it would have to be for a 756. Have not compared my 756 starters to 826s yet.

Dont have anyone around our area thatll even mess with them. The napa that used to rebuild starters and alternators in town quite doing them. Said it wasnt worth

That's a shame no one wants to do them.I have 3 shops within 20 miles one I used for 35 yrs other about 15.Both are very good.I apologize for assuming every area has a shop. The shops are always busy, starters, alternators laying everywhere. The one guy will even come to the farm to fix problems on control boxes on implements and wiring on tractors and equipment.

Good luck.

Yup, and how you deal with it is, you take the starter back to the dealer, tell them it's the wrong one, and respectfully ask them to get you the right one.

Bring your original starter to show them the difference.

Parts book also lists 108014A1

Oh and by the way the nose cone can be clocked to match your old starter.

I guess we are spoil t here as well, there are three good rebuilders within 30 mile circle,  the originals can be fixed im sure. The picture of the starter ihc686 posted looks correct and the tooth count is what i remember to be correct (I think)  and im pretty sure is what they need on that other thread that is running here.

it seems like in our area a lot of mennonites from out east are the ones doing the rebuilding, was a bunch that moved to clark county over the years. lots of repair shops for just about everything, wasnt like that before they started their migration to our area, at least 6 very good fabrication shops within 10 miles and all are busy,  several good tractor repair shops also.

That starter will work on a 656-h70 depending on the tooth count. I have no Idea why the IH engineers messed around with the starters so much on the mid frame tractors the problems really surfaced with the 310 engine. when they went to the 310 in the large frame tractor they had no problems .  I always recommend my customers stay away from off the shelf rebuilts because of the number of times I was asked to straighten out the mess because the core was already sent back. As far as using that starter on a D358 I know of no application that uses that small of diameter drive  with a larger drive it would fit a large frame tractor a 706D either version 756D or an 826D

that 30mt starter was used on some 666 diesels but the bottom was planed flat to clear the clutch housing cover on those tractors a repair bible should say never give up the core and rebuild what you got! At least once or twice a year needing  to start over because they sent in the core right away.

It's getting harder and harder to find the parts.

Many times Ebay is the only place.

New brushes and bushings usually fixed them unless ran to long with a slow start problem.

The solenoid can be replaced as well as the starter drive.

Compare old drive to new as tooth count, diameter, can all make it a wrong one.

This guy has a master kit with almost everything in it for $120.00

Sure beats the $400+ for a new/rebuilt one.

He would be worth contacting to be sure you get the right kit.
