Fordson F “Project X”

Recommended Posts

Got the fork freed up and installed. Measured the stroke and at the extremes of pedal travel there is 1” of stroke, more than enough to release that Cheby clutch. Will probably install a limited stop bolt in the fork housing to prevent over stroking the diaphragm.  Will be interesting to see how much pedal effort it will take to push it. I’m thinking won’t be too bad.  Seems most hydraulic release bearings state 0.700” maximum travel so we’re in the ball park. Might rig something to push the clutch diaphragm on the shop Floor and see how much to release. Looks like the release sleeve is going to be about 7 3/8” long give or take. I think this will be the last major part that doesn’t exist yet... then on to freshening the engine and assembly.

Input shaft done and installed for mock up (still waiting on a missing tranny gear coming courtesy of Bob at Fordson house. Pilot bushing machined to for the Detroit and installed to correct depth, (it actually is in a little deeper than in the picture), flywheel and clutch is back on, working on the release sleeve right now. Might be in for a clutch trial run this evening...

That’s a 468 (454 +0.060”) big block Chevy with open chamber rectangular port iron heads. I’m using it as a mock up for the marine gear right now but it needs lower compression pistons for pump gas  and will go in my ‘87 short step side 1/2 ton. There’s another engine in the works that needs a shoe box of $ to find me before it gets finished but it’s a big aluminum headed 489 BBC (+0.030” with a 1/4” extra stroke) that goes in this...  (had a single 1250 dominator in this video, haven’t run the Hilborn injection yet).

Well, that looks like fun! In my younger days I dreamed of an Allison XB 2003 with 225 Merc. pro max. Probably a good thing I never got one, might have died on the water.
