TommyW
1985 IH 5088 2wd 4400 hours. When parked, it ran and operated fine (I was told this model had a problem with one side of the gears). A couple years later, I started it, but it wouldn't go. As I let the clutch out, it made a slight impulse forward (at the very top of the pedal), but that's all. It didn't put a noticeable load on the engine, and it would do it in any gear I tried. I tried it with the system cold and again after letting it run over a half hour. Power steering works. There's pressure on the brakes--since it won't go, I can't say much more about the brakes. I did jack the tractor up to make sure the wheels would turn. I changed the three hydraulic filters, and the fluid level is fine. Anyone have a clue about what might be the problem? You can tell I'm grasping at straws. BTW, no red equipment dealers near, so asking a local dealer is out.
searcyfarms
i own one but not much for able to troubleshoot - will say from reading most of teh other guys stuff here you will be asked about relays and possibly sentry vs test harness - if you are not aware there is something in them that goes out about the hours you are at or sooner if they havent been repaired already. I was told when I bought mine if its got over 5K hours it was likely already repaired. If you had not see any issues previous I would lean more towards a relay/electrical issue vs something worse internally but then again I dont know about what breaks and how it breaks. I do remember mike telling me how to test and it involved slipping and bad clutches or something so that would tell me yours is likely not that. The relays/fuses are between your feel in the console door where the sentry sits - thats about all I have - sorry its not much almost laughable that is why I am here cause i know I need help LOL
TB5288
The sentry unit gets power from left battery, unless it's been moved to cab solenoid. This would be one of the first things to check. Did you try shifting between 1-2,3-4, of 5-6? You should hear the tractor make this shift. Even with range in neutral and clutch up. If you can't hear anything when making these shifts, the sentry module (assuming it still has one) is not getting power.
ThirdGenRed
We have a 1985 5088 4x4 and if it worked fine when parked and barely will move when you let out the clutch, it is electrical. Like TB5288 said, no power going to the Sentry. In fact, if you have no Sentry or no test harness plugged in, it will do the same thing, barely move then stop when you let out the clutch. My best guess would be the independent power wire on the left battery is corroded or the inline fuse blown. Mike Links said to disconnect that small power wire with a fuse from the left battery and hook it to the cab solenoid output so the Sentry only has power when the key is on. You can also check the two fuses in the fuse panel and the relays on the Sentry. Make sure the Sentry has a good ground, not grounded thru that relay like the factory did. jimw
Run a wire off the positive and negative battery pole to one the solenoids , this will bypass the sentry. I bet it will go . They end up having poor connections after many years

TommyW
I had no clue the electrical could cause this. I'll get right on these suggestions and hopefully come back with good news. Thanks everyone. BTW, I have about two hours seat time on this machine, so I've got a lot to learn. Thanks for the coaching. Tommy
