Long Farms Posted December 3, 2021 Share Posted December 3, 2021 Been looking for 2 years for a clean decent 510/5100 drill to come up gor sale/auction. Nothing but over priced junk thats never seen a shed. Expanded my search and it got me up into KS in old stomping grounds. Found a nice IH 510 2 owner 12' grain drill. Sold new @ American Farm Supply IH dealership in McPherson KS. Single disc openers, row markers and pack wheels. Pack wheels and row markers stood out to me. Also had been looking for a 315/415 cultimulcher. Hoping id find a 415 1st. Just wasn't many if any in my area. Only remember a 315 when i was a kid. 415 is '13 working width, c tines, rear hitch and hyd hook ups. Plan is to use both in tandem in spring/fall for seeding forage grasses and winter cover crop. Asked around to local farmers and ranchers about using a cultimulcher with drill and most had no clue on what i was talking about. ksfarmdude Posted December 3, 2021 Share Posted December 3, 2021 Back in the 80's I bought a brand new 5100 20x8 single disc drill with fertilizer From Dauer Implement then at that time It did get a good stand but had other drawbacks I couldn't live with Like having to lift the press wheels by hand for road transport using a silly lifting bar thing and chaining them and also they ran the fertilizer and seed down the same hose to the opener which doesn't work needless to say when our IH dealers were gone I traded it for an 8350 John deere 20x8 hydraulic press wheels separate hoses I really liked it wished I still had it now for spot planting Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
766 Man Posted December 3, 2021 Share Posted December 3, 2021 As far as putting the culti-mulcher ahead of the drill in a tandem it has been done. The concept was expanded upon when a company (Yetter or Unverferth) developed an integral implement that bolted to the drill or planter frame. From that the no-till coulter arrangement was developed to attach to planters. Anyways, it works great as long as the soil is dry enough and you are a very straight driver. As far as nice shed kept drills they used to be around and some looked like they were new from the dealer even if they were decades old. Still happens from time to time but far less common today sadly. There is a very nice JD 216 forage wagon sitting over at the auction yard for the sale tomorrow that other than one shield looks like it came through a time portal from 1969. hagan Posted December 4, 2021 Share Posted December 4, 2021 Had a 15.5 ft 415 purchased it for $8500 in 1990 and sold it 2 years ago for $6500. Really a great machine. Sold to a neighbor and he said a far superior machine compared to his 315. Also had a IHC 510 24X5 Double Disk i paid $3200 in 1976 and sold for $2500 Both were good machines. The only problem with the 415 was the cylinder bracket that was welded onto the rock shaft broke loose and i welded and reinforced it and never another problem. MacAR Posted December 6, 2021 Share Posted December 6, 2021 Nice score all the way 'round. I use an old #10 drill, been looking around for a nicer 510 but the smaller ones are hard to find. I'd like an 8' (same as my #10) but the few I've found have been junk as you said. As to your original question, I run a spring tooth harrow and brillion cultipacker ahead of the drill and planter. Not exactly a cultimulcher but similar performance I imagine. At the very least I think it makes a good seedbed for just about anything. I have thought about buying one myself before and something like that could effect what I would be willing to pay. Given what shipping would cost me extra for being wide.
