hillman
With mine I just go out hit the glow plugs , crank it and it lights up. No ether ( not suggested ) , no block heater and then she sits on the generator sipping fuel making music
MarkG
The 282 does sip fuel. Mine dropped a valve and I miss it. The 282 is quiet also. That would make a great generator tractor!
Jacka
Love the International 656's,just a very good all-around 50 cow 70's dairy farm tractor
Nyjim
Got a 706 with one and it does about 1/2 gallon an hour using a 1000/540 adapter. Not sure I could go out and get it started though. It needs batteries and I’m cheap. I only have to worry about the house now and bought a harbor freight generator. I still got the pto one in case we get an extended outage but this gas powered one is much easier to get going in a open shed where it’s dry just back feed the welder plug. Still pull the transfer switch.
hobbyfarm
Nice. Having trouble getting mine started even I'm warm weather. I'm going to have to work on it this winter.

Yes the solenoid is turned about 1/8 or a turn to the left from the rear looking forward but it misses the steering shaft. If i remember the 656 has hydraulic steering lines instead of the shaft so it should work easier than on a
Farmall Doctor
Ours never had a block heater either, and it was used on the mix mill all winter and spread manure on the frozen ground until the pigs left. I didn’t know that the D282 was hard to start until I joined the internet!
searcyfarms
owned two 282s, werent hard to start if things were working properly, never used ether on either of ours. Just lean on the glow plugs, leave throttle at idle and crank is how both of ours started best. 706 w/310 is way different, no ether required for it - seems to start very good even down to 10 i try not to get on tractors w/out cabs n heat below that LOL - love the 282 for sipping fuel and sound vs a 4cyl. oleman
I missed my chance for a cold weather start in March of 21 in North Texas when the weather was -5F around here for several days. I didn't even attempt to start the D179 because below 32F it is already very iffy. Our little Honda EV 4010 (4KW) gas genset started right up. It works like a pony motor to start the diesels. DWF
I had a 1966 TD-9B with a DT282. It was about 6 years old when I got it. Used it in the winter in NE Minnesota for logging. It started in well below zero weather with no problem. I don't remember using glow plugs with warm starts either. DWF
Dave Shepard
The 656 on the TMR has a TD-9B engine in it. Starts well, but is plugged in in the winter. On a timer for an hour or two in the morning. A lot easier on it that way.
nepoweshiekfarmalls
Back when we raised a lot of hogs, the electricity went out. The 706 gas fired right up in the zero degree weather. Hooked the Winpower generator up to it. Used it to run power for the hog buildings and the engine heater on the 856 Custom on the grinder mixer. After all the feed was mixed and hogs fed, the 856 went onto the generator. It ran 24 hours a day until the electricity came back on.

Has been a warm early winter. Went out held on glow plugs for 30 seconds and hit the starter and it it spun that engine over so fast it was running in 10 seconds. Was 50 out though but it is a whole different machine to start. This is just normal now.

I always plug in my diesels as well, lot easier on everything but the power went out Sunday and its nice to have a diesel that will start. if I had to I could use a little 2 stroke generator to plug it in or run generator with a gasser like Aaron does
