Tractor of the week # 33 4156

An IH 4156 would have been quite a beast in it's day. Can you imagine your neighbor driving past as you pull into the field with a shiny new 4156 back in the day? The coffee shop guys would have had something to talk about for sure. So this week let's see and hear about the mighty 4156.

I don’t have one but want one!  Saw one 25?years ago when I worked a custom harvest crew out west. It was parked at the edge of a field next to a field we cut. Been fascinated with them ever since. It was a red one didn’t know they came yelllow for a few years later. Did I say I want one?

Never been around one before, a friend of mine had one years ago and sold it to a neighbor. At least I think it was a 56. @Steve C.may know for sure what it was.

I am kind of kicking myself, I could have bought one 15 or so years ago for $2500 and it was in great shape.

Darren had a 4166 for a while.  He told me it was a clumsy brute.

I always thought I'd like to run one, but it might have gotten old fast.

Look at  that  elusive nose weight under mount bracket setup in his first pic.

My grandfather and his brothers had a 4166.  Think it only had 1500-2k hours on it when they retired 20 years ago.  Used for pulling a corn chopper during a wet fall was it.   Grandfather use to tell a story of how he sort of lost the tandem axles out from under a chopper box in the mud one year.  He was old enough he didn’t look back much.   Helper pointed out that there were four wheels missing when it was time to swap wagons. Probably only an 18’ wagon, but I’m sure it was full.
(An in need of repair after that that).

I've never seen any of these operating. How did they compare to the later 2+2?

They would look better with 28lx26 rice and cane!

Thx-Ace

2+2 is a much nicer tractor to operate. We have 3788 and 4166 so not quite a equal comparison. We did pull the same implements with both, and the 4166 never really struggled, it just did it slower. And a couple of our hills it was a bit short on traction compared to the 2+2. One thing is the 4166 would float through mud even better than the 3788

The 4156 is rare.  They only made just over 200 units.  I’ve never seen one.  4100s on the other hand were somewhat popular around here.  My uncle had one.  Know were there are 3 or 4 more and seen about that many more at auctions.  They were a good answer to the 5020 for IH die hards

A little over 1200 4100 built.  216 or18 (info at shop) 4156's, which were yellow (re numbered 41's) . 4166 was the first red and got the new engines ,436  I have a 4100,28L x 26, and a 6788, 18.4 x 38 R's the ride between the two is quite different .  67 floats along and the 41 bucks and bounces along.

Was there no red 4156? I'm fairly certain a guy not far away from here had one. I know most were yellow but I always recall his being red. Unless it was repainted?

Seems like Arts-Way and maybe another company made front end loaders specifically for the 4156 and the Case tractors of similar design.  I have that advertisement somewhere deep in my archives but that is like trying to find which haystack to find the needle. in.

Tell me about the 140hp.  I know that was a lot at the time but now it is nothing for a tractor with half the weight.  Wouldn't these tractors run out of hp long before running out of traction in normal conditions?

Pretty neat tractors always liked them, talking to some neighbors that had them said they were miserable to run , I can’t imagine any worse than other rigs of the day. In hard pulls they would try to hop I’m told. There where a few around might still be one left here

Loud, noisey, dusty would describe any tractor of that era if that is what miserable means

I would take the loud and noisy part, dusty may be a breaking point. I would take it but I can see how others could not.
