1086 muffler... keep it or leave it?

Got a 1086 project I started working on and the muffler is shot. Is it worth replacing I know an eliminator would lower the egt and do away with a lot of heat under the hood so is there any noticeable difference in cab noise?  Whenever I’m in the field several hours at the time I like to enjoy a quiet ride my days of making all the noise I could are starting to slow down lol. Thanks

Its your call , it would definitely run cooler but you'll have the noise too I took the underhood muffler out from under the hood on my 10 but I used and turbo coupling from a 66 series tractor and put an above hood muffler that a 1466 would use on it got rid of the heat and had minimal noise

Does anyone here use hearing protection?

I use in-ear monitors, plugged into my Ipod so I can listen to some tunes....(this blocks out a lot of noise) and then over/above those, I wear some over-ear protection muffs that you might find someone at the airport wearing (bought the highest db reduction I could find)

When combined, I've got pretty clear tunes playing in my head, the tractor noise (1066 open station) is GREATLY muted.

My brother in law, I suppose he's a he-man....  says he doesn't like using any hearing protection.....he wants to hear the machinery in case something happens, he'll hear the noise of it.

I try to tell him I can still hear things, they're just greatly muted.  You don't need to hear a deafening "clank" to know something is wrong, if you can instead hear a background "clank".  An odd noise injected into the drone of what's going on can stick out pretty obviously.

I don't even like to get on the tractor to move it from its parking spot, to the house for fueling without "my ears" on.

Hunh? 👂🦻😆

When I remember I put in earplugs. Usually forget tho. Never worry about em in the yard but if I'm gonna run something at pto rpm for a few hours it does help.

Your brother in law is right. I know ever noise and vibration of my equipment,  I can here scrappers on the disc making noise if one gets bent, I can here the small rocks hitting the opener disc's on the planter. I can't think of all the various things if caught and been able to do small preventative maintenance on vs major repairs because I heard a strange noise before I found a broken part.

I've used the over the ear radio hearing protectors,  they get used on the lawn mower and that's it.

As far as muffler or not on an 86 series, I'd try it without and if it's too loud put an above hood muffler on.

i have never liked ear muff protectors, ever since I once did radar target tracking watch on a USN ship. The headset always made my elephant ears hurt after 20 minutes or so.  I do use them for chain sawing, grinding and being in the same space with loud equipment, think gas turbine generator. Our little RV 4 KW genset is actually only about 70 DB and not bad at all.  I expect I could currently hear better if I had  protected my hearing better over the 77 years, but I just blame hearing loss on USN RADAR  watch syndrome.

I use ear plugs or muffs whether I am mowing the lawn on a compact diesel tractor, skid loader, dozer, tractors, chain saw no matter what I do. I don't like the noise anymore at all, mufflers on everything too.The noise actually makes my head buzz and ears hurt a little.I can hear EVERY noise that a machine makes from normal operating sounds to knives hitting a guard on mowers, drive chains running dry on the round baler, scraping noises in disks or drills. The hydro whine is annoying  also of my IH Hdyro tractors.

I never wore any protection when I was younger up into my 40's.I don't know how I could stand the noise from crazy loud plowing, chopping with tractors without  cabs.

Is the cab tightly sealed and does the a/c work? With the cab closed up the extra noise shouldn't be too bad. If you have to run with the Windows open all the time it will be noticeable. It also depends on what kind of work your doing and how hard the tractor is working. I think it comes down to personal preference. I like the sound of a diesel with open exhaust  but there are some that dont. Also consider your neighbors if you live in a populated area.

I'll also add that I think if you can use a bigger diameter pipe for the stack it seems to mellow the tone a little bit and take some of the bark away.

A tall stack should help.    I use hearing protection more and more- in a pinch I will wad up bits of tissue to use as ear plugs-  and I've yet to have a situation where I was prevented from hearing a bad bearing or whatever because of it.

Always use ear plugs. Never had a problem hearing something going wrong while wearing them.

Thanks for all the input. As for hearing protection I’ll wear it on open stations most of the time especially running a discbine or something but never felt the need in a cab like to turn the radio on just enough to hear it and roll on. As of the cab condition it’s toast but it’s a project and extra attention is going to be paid to the cab area making sure it’s tighter and quieter than factory if anyway possible. The tractor currently has the factory bull horn on it and I thought the extra height above the cab would make the change less noticeable on the inside when finished vs the ones I’ve ran where the height was flush with the cab.

I have had a muffler eliminator on my 1486 for years no difference at all with doors on and doesn't bother me even in the summer when I take the doors off.  My 1086 that has 1066 style exhaust and tin on that side is a different story it barks pretty good, gets a little annoying with the doors off.

My 1486 has an eliminator.  Cab is tight, exhaust stack is tall. Noise is minimal.

Your Chrome On Your Pipe Must be a Better Quality than the Pipe we Purchased,  Our pipe is a Beautiful Purple & Blue color to the very Top of the Pipe!

The Exhaust pipe is a Heavy Duty pipe, Turned colors within the first few Hours of Tillage work.

Tractor looks Sharp!!  18.4-42's on the Rear!!

I used the super great 3M muffs with the radio in them.

Those were so quiet that I could feel things happening but could not hear what it was.

Sorry 3M, but those were to good in my opinion.

I didn't even realize my 1586 had an eliminator on it till after I used it quite a bit lol.   It's not loud at all in the cab, it does whistle a little outside of the cab but I think it sounds good.

My magnum has an eliminator as well, and again in the cab no big deal, but it does bark a little outside of the cab.
