1566 Black Stripe Questions

I’m planning to bid on this 1566 tomorrow at a local auction.  Based on the serial number I believe it is a true black stripe.  Anyone have any reason to believe otherwise?  The cab is throwing me for a loop because it is different than any other 1566 I’ve seen. Any thoughts are appreciated and any guesses at what it’ll sell for?

The 1566 Black Stripes started at 11929 according to parts break for the decal package. (you left a 9 out of your serial number in the text of your post)

The early white cab might have been put on when the TA was replaced.

Its a fake Black stripe '75 model the black stripe models started in '76 the cab doesn't look original either even for a '75 year they were red cab's It looks rode hard and put away wet around my area it would bring 5-6 grand maybe

Weights are worth $1200 or more. Around here a 1566 would bring around $10,000. Cab is not original. Are there a set of fenders on the sale?

If you need weights just buy them , Why shell out 10,000 for a big repair bill ? Maybe its a good parts tractor

Its a legit factory 1566 black stripe. Black stripes started rolling off the line in Nov of '75. All the '75 black stripes had S/N on bell housing. S/N Moved to RH rear end housing for all if '76. Bet the 15 rear end housing has plate for upcoming S/N tag relocation.  S/N is only true way to tell. That 1566 was factory cab but for one reason or another cab was swapped out. Only 1566 #1 had white cab from factory. #2 till end of production had Red deluxe cabs from factory.

heres the fact production list

766 - B.S. 16541 and up

966 - B.S. 31263 and up

1066 - B.S. 55425 and up

1466 - B.S. 28897 and up

1566 - B.S. 11929 and up

1568 - B.S. 7945 and up

Hydro 100 - B.S. 12235 and up

For comparison here's the beginning of the 1976 serial numbers.

766 - 16840

966 - 31772

1066 - 56672

1466 - 29516

1566 - 12589

1568 - 7975

Hydro 100 - 12434

Never been around any black stripes. Mechanically, is there a difference?

No, most of the changes were external parts as they introduced the various mounts for the 86 series control center.

Sold for $9,400, I passed in hopes of finding one in a little nicer shape.  Thanks for all those that responded

Seemed like a decent deal to me?   A true Black stripe 1566 with a full rack of weights valued at 1,200 so the actual tractor brought $8,200. :)

Never understood the fascination with the black stripe....to me it was just the interim abortion between the real 66 series and the 86 series.    And the way that black stripe goes up the hoods is just wrong....I'd have fired that designer.    To each his own, I guess.

Any complete running 1066-1566 for less than $10k seems pretty reasonable to me.  Of course, I didn't see the tractor in person, sometimes things are worse than they appear.

LOL   I don't think we can be friends! :P

Personally I like the black stripes with the red panels as they stand out a little more than a white panel tractor.   But then again I like the red power demonstrator 86 series due to their red panels.   All that being said I don't know what IH was thinking with the red strip 86 series! :)

The black stripe designer was an engineer from ford. He designed those hood stripes on 72 or 74 fords.  You were a big operator back in the time if you had a black stripe tractor. That and a red top 914 combine were bragging points for years in our area.

I'm pretty sure legend from back in the day was the Black Stripe tractors had twice the HP a white panel had.  LOL

On a serious note Jeff is right in that it's just a transition to the newer model and was a way to generate some last of the series sales.    I do however disagree and think the Black Stripes look as good as a 1206 with their white accents.

Forgot at least several thousand more in repairs, Never seen an auction tractor field ready yet that's a lot extra than just weights I can buy them all day here if I need them without buying a fixer-up old tractor

Do you mean the tri-stripe 86 series aka red panels? Or do I have a new 86 series to lookup.

Yes the tri stripe where they added the red stripe looks silly to me :)

Obviously i,m biased toward the Blackstripe Family !The 15 i,m working on now was sold to me as runs great ,But like most 15,s it too was rode hard and put away wet !Air Filter full of dirt ,Radiator stopped up with dirt discovered worn bearings burnt pistons .Have to at their age just plan on worst case when you buy them unless you know some history .I like all the 66,s just like the Stripe Family a little better !
