Twolines
I recently picked up a 500 gas crawler with a 6 way blade. I haven't gotten to deep into it yet...but im already having problems. I ran it the day it was delivered to me and noticed the carb leaking gas. Ive looked and looked and cant seem to find a rebuild kit..could use some direction there. Another thing i came across is the battery was void of liquid.. which got me thinking, is there a kit of some sort or someone who has switched to 12v that i could mock their swap? Then i started thinking about a way to get away from a points distributor... Im sure as time passes ill find more things that will get me thinking lol and id like this to be my all purpose 500 thread. Feel free to scold me with everything i need to know even if i already know lol..

just Dave
You may not need a carb kit. Pull it apart and lap in your float valve. Make gasket while sitting by the fire. I wouldn't get to deep into electric change over until you run it a bit,
louie figone
Twolines, the 500 came with a 12 volt system. Or am I misunderstanding what you want to do with the electrical system.
Coyote Crossing
If you want to get rid of the points and condenser you can install an electronic ignition system. They are not expensive. I bought one for my 500 but haven't installed it yet. I'll probably wait until Spring. I have a zenith carb and had no trouble finding a rebuild kit. I rebuilt it several times and finally replaced it with a new American made Zenith carb.

Twolines
Mmi i dont have my manuals yet.. not sure of the original battery. It had a deep cycle interstate that was half empty when i got the dozer.
Twolines
Coyote where did u get the electronic system and carb rebuild kit? Just dave i do plan on having a look at it before rebuilding. Just wanted to be prepared otherwise.
just Dave
12 v batteries have 6 caps.. 6volt batteries have 3 caps . Each cell on a battery is 2 volts
Coyote Crossing
The carb rebuilt kit for a Zenith series 68 carb came from Steiner tractor parts (part #ABC1346). It did not include the float but you can order that separate. Make sure the picture matches your float. The found the electronic ignition module on Amazon--Premium Electronic Ignition module for IH Farmal 4 cyl 12v The USA made replacement Zenith carb came from Norfar.com - part # 12566. Is there any chance that the tractor was over-charging the battery? That would cause a loss of battery fluid. Some one on here should know how to check for over-charging. I do have have cab panels which bolt on to my ROPS which would be nice in Alaska, if you had a ROPS.
Twolines
Thanks Coyote. Pretty cool machine u have there. I do not have rops...would really like/need it though as i have plenty of work to do in the woods. A cab would be cool for summer if it kept the skeeters out lol but i dont plan to use the unit much in winter....maybe the occasional driveway scrape. Twolines
Ok been reading through my manuals and im realizing they are for a slighty later model series. No worries, still a great amount of useable material. I did notice that theres not a lot of info to help me identify whats inside my gear box. There is a 5 range shifter with reverse, a reverser lever, a pedal on the right and a pedal on the left. How do i tell if theres a torque converter in there or not?
Coyote Crossing
The pedal on the right is the brake. It applies the brakes on the steering clutches. The pedal on the left is the power shift pedal. It allows you to ease up on something or stop without shifting the reverser into the neutral position. You don't have a regular clutch. Just put the reverser in the neutral position. In the transmission you have 5 forward gears and NO reverse, so when you put the reverser into reverse you have 5 reverse speed. I have never used 4 or 5, as they are too fast unless you are on soft smooth ground with no obstacles. I don't have a torque converter but I don't think you can have a reverser and a torque converter. As for the cab panels, I would probably sell them. The windows in the rear panel are glass and one slides. The other three panels have plexiglass windows and they are scratched and cloudy and should be replaced with lexan. Right now they are behind my boat and would be difficult to photograph. If you want pictures I can try.
Twolines
Thanks for all the info. Ill have to put some thought into the cab but it currently doesnt have rops and i bet itd cost a fortune to ship to Alaska. Im a collector of things and when i collect something, i find myself collecting things related. After reading the manuals i came accross a few tools i dont have and may need/want to collect them. Ive looked on ebay for some of these IH tools and cant find much more than some wrenches. Any ideas where they might be had or just look at yard sales and estate sales and auctions. TD5Jordan
Ahh so I’m not the only who has to deal with the joys of spring break up and wet ground . Nice 500 hopefully things dry up soon and you can put it to work cheers from Prince George BC
Twolines
Ya its pretty bad this year we got a lot of snow and a couple days of rain before thaw. We have a few pumps on hand and they are getting a workout...matter of fact i have to go back into town as one of the ends of a brand new 700$ dollar hose is leaking. Running the dozer today has revealed a few problems already. Carb is leaking. It turns fine although there seems to be a ton of travel in the sticks. I cant seem to get it to pivot. The right pedal(brake?) Doesnt seem to do much and i can only get it into gear at low rpms.(left pedal clutch?) This year it only needs to do a little dirt moving and a little grading...then winter over in the shop to be opened up and inspected...unless i find the time this summer. Twolines
Ian it will remain with points for now. I was just curious at the time. Also went back and read coyote crossings reply to me..glad i did. Needed an understanding of that left pedal again lol
Twolines
Need some help determining what carb i have. I know its a zenith. There is a brass tag and on it there are two numbers. 392425 91 and 3056. The 392425?91 number, where i put the ? mark is scuffed off. Is this supposed to be an R? Also been looking at steiner tractor and cant locate a kit that has either number i listed referenced.
