New grain-train, selling Semi.

I'm a lousy saleman....I admit it.   I never know how to advertise or price items, and always prefer to tell the shopper "all the things wrong".....

Anyway, this fall I decided that owning a semi was ridiculous, now that I'm down to 160 acres and 2.5 miles to the elevator.    So I bought a couple wagons.  OK, behind the 4wd may be overkill, but its what I got free in the fall.    Actually worked out really well, the 4wd has powershift, and doesn't hardly notice the wagons.  (BTW, the mess on the tires is mounting soap!)

Now I gotta advertise the semi.   The tractor is fairly nice ('97, only 400K), but the trailer is a '76 and getting a little rough - subframe is pretty rusty.  So I got it sitting out by the road and......somebody stops and asks if I want to sell just the TRAILER......(Go figure!)

Anyway, I'd be curious if any of you have any suggestions.  Places to advertise.  (Right were I live there are no close local "auctions", I've never had much success with the Agri-News or Farmweek classifieds).  Even "I sold one like that recently for $xxxx".  Sure, every place is different, but I got no clue.   Truck sell better w/w/o the trailer?

By all means,  sell the trailer if somebody makes you a decent offer. A plain bare tractor sells easier than a tractor/trailer to anybody with a trailer to pull.

About 3-1/2 years ago about 50 miles north of me a nice Super M with a "good as new" Stan-Hoist loader exactly like the one on Dad's M minus all the weld metal and patches was advertised on Craigs List,  price was reasonable, and was advertised for a week.  I should have bought the SM & loader, then advertised the SM. Put the nice loader on MY M and scrapped my loader.

Guy looking for a tractor may not want a loader, guy looking for a loader may not want another tractor.

Take a few good pictures and toss it on your local Craigslist. I've had good luck buying and selling there. Also FB Marketplace if you're on FB. Being this is the middle of harvest, I'd think somebody surely is looking for a good truck and trailer. And like Dr. Evil said, sell one or the other if you get a good enough offer!

I’m with everyone else.  Sell the trailer if you’ve got a buyer!  The next guy might show up offering good money for just the tractor, then you’d be stuck with a trailer and nothing to pull it!

Facebook marketplace is incredible for selling things here.  Even if you aren't on it find a neighbor friend relative to post for you and put your phone number in the ad.

Ya no joke! The local C-list isn't near what it was since marketplace took off. I bought a 186 planter off FB the other day after looking for an IH plate planter on c-list forever. My 340u came from FB too. But I've had good luck with both places honestly.

I do appreciate all the comments....I've been hearing more & more about Facebook (which is one thing I have never been interested in).  I would have to get "the boss" involved....as she does that.   Not sure she has any experience on marketplace though.

The 4wd sure makes you feel in control on the wagons - sit up high and plenty of power.   I added mirrors from K&M which worked out really well.   Biggest issue is 6" clearance on each side of the tires on the scale- you have to pull on real straight!   The last trip I made, they had guys there marking boxes just outside all 4 corners of the scale....I sure hope they do not plan to put big posts right there, as I'd be squeezing thru.....

Finding venues to place the ad is easy enough, the hard part is coming up with a number.

I suggest doing a little research on what similar trucks in similar condition are selling for. Lots of that online.

Trucktrader.com, truckpaper.com (the truck side of tractorhouse), are where I'd start, keeping mind those prices are high retail.

I've had good luck with CL over the years and of late too.

Just a thought, sell the truck and keep the trailer. Put a dolly under it and hook it behind the 4x4 tractor. This gives you the opportunity to borrow a road tractor to haul further if you need to. This is assuming that you keep the trailer road worthy.

I'd separate especially if you have a buyer for the trailer. Facebook marketplace is all you need to sell it. It's crazy how many people use it. It's so easy to post an add, even I can do it. The only thing is people tend to want to message you through there, so you would have to either put a phone number in a picture, or she can give your number to serious inquiries by messenger. It's easy to do.

99.99999999+ % of the people on fashismbook can't read in the add that you have no messenger even if you list the phone number first before anything else. My experience anyway

But I do admit it was a good place to sell things

The truck by itself will sell better!--NOT everybody wants an old hopper, so IF you have a nibble on it JUMP on the chance!

Around these things are NOT selling due to all the govt. restrictions on them, so getting rid of it could be quite a problem!

At any rate, good luck on your venture! And the tractor/wagon idea is a smart move! lol!

Yah, that's partially by design though. I do read the ad entirely, but fashismbook as you coined it doesn't want you to put your number in the add. Not entirely sure what they care for, its your number your willing to put out there. Honestly for non farm related things, (cars, trucks, trailers, etc.) I've gotten to where I prefer messenger. I can ignore the idiots which theres plenty of for sure. Farm stuff, tractors and stuff it cuts down about to 1/3rd It seems. What aggravates me is when you message someone and ask for a phone number or leave your own and they wont answer or call you back. Too much of an inconvenience. Messaged a guy on a nice little kodiak grain truck a couple weeks ago and it took him over a week to acknowledge my message. Then he said call him tomorrow any time, which I did, and no answer, no return call for 3 days. Pee on yah pal I'm not chasing you down to ask yah about your pos truck 3hrs away from me. Lol. Wanna sell it or dont yah

I'm a farmer, I buy retail, & sell wholesale.....even on the equipment I buy.   Sigh.    8? years ago, I was looking to replace a couple old 68-72 Ford grain trucks with a tandem.  Cheapest diesel tandem I could find was $35k.  My uncle out in IA said "Why not buy our semi we have for sale for half that?  1997 tractor, aluminum trailer, runs great!"   He did NOT tell me the trailer was a '76 model until I got out there!  Geeze, even family!

Well, he was right that the semi runs great.   I got no complaints that way.   The trailer is nothing special, but other than a few lights and 1 tire that blew in the yard, its got every load to the elevator.   Just IL is getting way too expensive to license and way too many regs.
