John P.
Having a T340 is the answer to all life's questions. Mine has a Drott 4 in 1 and a ripper all factory still. In running the machine I have been hearing a sound in the hydraulic and no malfunctions or loss of power, no leaks, bent steel lines or any other assorted BS. But an annoying ROWR ROWR ROWR sound from the tranny/bell housing when load was on the pump while working. So, the prior blogs from the faithful on Red Power yielded information from you guys and gave me confidence to solve this problem. The previous owner had a new 12GPM pump installed about the time Jerry Ford was in office. I put some blocks under the tracks and let some oil out of the sump. Then pulled off the pump and filter covers, replacing the filter and cleaning the screen again as disturbing the bowels of the oil reservoir will stir up some crud. On pulling the pump I discovered that the nylon lock nut securing the pump drive gear was not holding the gear solid but the nut was bottomed out. This resulted in the driven gear wobbling on the shaft creating shaft and gear bore damage. Investigating the lock nut stopped when I noticed the zinc/cadmium plating on it. That is a dead giveaway that the prior mechanic had used a substandard locknut resulting in the damage to the bore and the shaft. How we do err in confidence. The locknut was not of sufficient height to have the threads engage the shaft threads by only two threads and therefore friction between the nylon insert and the shaft was holding the gear in place. An 87 tooth gear with that bore and keyway that is NLA. Well we fixed it. The gear teeth on the driven and driving gear on the crank were not damaged. We used a WEDM to cut a 1 inch dia hole with two keys into the gear. Using the same program we cut an insert for the gear with .0005 press fit out of P-20 tool steel which had a hardness of RC 45. Then pressed it into the gear and microwelded it with soft SS rod. Then a little trip to the draw furnace. There are guys in Tennesee in a hidden secret complex(his code name is Josh) that make a new 17GPM pump(which is correct for this machine) provided a replacement pump. I installed the gear. Now how to fasten it?? Now after all that work and supplication with obedience to the One True Way we will get to the lesson of Fasteners. 1. ANY bolt, nut, screw, pins or washers with zinc/cadmium coating will not stand up to the beating this machine can take. They WILL fail. Sometimes with disastrous results. The black monster of that gear coming off under load and crashing other gears that are irreplaceable still awakens me at all hours. It hides in the closet. 2. Use ONLY Grade 8 or better yet, Aircraft Grade for any thing that requires a fastener. More money? sure. 3. Remember you are wrenching on it because it broke, needs adjusting, or is just plain worn out, OR some ham fisted hack was in there before you and your machine has travelled all those miles and maybe at least 70 years to get into your shop. Respect the fact that it has come to you for healing. DON'T MAKE A PROMISE TO YOUR MACHINE AND THEN USE THAT HACK PART IN A BIN FROM ED'S TV AND HARDWARE. I bought two Aircraft Grade locknuts, no nylon, with and interference fit on the threads. It seated the repaired gear on the new pump shaft and engaged all threads on the shaft. All is mounted and in place. The machine now operates without the annoying and potentially destructive ROWR sound. Operates a little faster as well. oldtanker
I have my T340 in pieces right now. I too have the Drott 4-in-1 and the Drott ripper (no teeth, looking for some or a pattern so I can make some). Mine is apart for a water pump. But I need a new thermostat housing as someone had damaged the one that's on it. Got new gauges for it too as the old ones are all broke. Now I have it apart I can see the wiring needs some TLC. SO I'm rewiring it as I look for parts. Great write up! Rick
louie figone
John P I like your writing style, it makes me wanting to read more. I have owned two T340's one was an ag crawler, three point hitch, pto, IH 600 dozer which I made into a hydraulic tilt, the other was a T340A with the Drott 4 in 1 bucket and ripper, they were good little tractors. hardtail
Great writing this has a Zeke flair where you can almost smell the sweat, gear oil and cut the air with obscenities OT usually the ground engaging equipment was generic, you should be able to find that fairly readily, is it just the toolbar or you have the teeth but need the wear covers? OE are like hens teeth.... of the 30..odd only have 1 drott tool bar and 3 AM/barn teeth. 2" thick IIRC when the stay pins wear they get lost whole unit is heavy and rides too low to not remove after each use

Rick as said they will have to be shop made ,NLA since < '70 3 for lite work as the entire machine is no up to what that could do with 100 hp and 6K more # !!!! when made, make SURE the frame mounts are correct with clean bolt threads and TOTALLY PROPER bolts really only for roots, hard pan, soft stone on a wide level cut, main use was a counter weight for getting hung up with
