Since we have returned, once again we have a tractor of the week. Let's take a look at all those 966's still out earning their keep.

550 chopper in the first picture?  Probably the most widely sold IH row crop at the time around here.  1066 was starting to pull even when IH went over to the 86 series.

I bought my 966 at a farm auction in 1984. It sold really cheap. About everyone else there but me knew that it had transmission problems. Cost me price again to get it repaired. It was my big tractor until I bought the 1086 in late 80s. I bought a Y-A-R cab for it a few years after it arrived.

It  has plowed, unloaded corn in the bunk, done all parts of haying, ran the corn dryer, and spent a lot of time hooked to the manure spreader.

Arrival, with 20.8x34s.

Both hubs eventually cracked and were replaced with 38" wedgelocks.

For 36 years my 966 has been earning her keep.

When I bought my 1486 a couple years ago, I told the wife I would let the "9" go to help pay for it.

You know she says. When we were first married I remember listening for the change in pitch of the straight pipe on the 966 to know when you were coming in from the hayfield at night. We don't need the money that bad. Let's just keep her around.

My eyes leaked a little bit.

Those first years were hard but the "9" as well as the other IH tractors I have owned, helped get me through.

Mom posing with our 966. Love that tractor, bought it with around 1200 hrs. has around 8000 now. Was our big tractor when I was little, now our planting, spraying, auger and hay stacker tractor. Not the prettiest, but almost oil leak free, still a few to tend to. 20200506_233142.thumb.jpg.d32122d27b737bab23627875c9f56730.jpg

I have my 966 for several years.  Came from a farm sale 30 miles away.  Been a good tractor.  Spent quite a bit of time on the bale processor when I had cattle.  Spreads a little fertilizer.  Mostly my snow blower tractor.  Think I will use it on my disk mower next summer.

How about another hydro? I’d love to own a 9 someday but so far this is my closest attempt.

I also have a 1/16 scale 966 with a red cab and a 1/64 966 blackstripe

A 966 was Dad's last tractor.  Bought it from the dealership in Dyersville.  Supposedly came off a dairy farm with about 900 hours on it.  Finally got rid of the early 706 gas.  He was happy, and I was happy.  The last big tractor I plowed and disked with before I went into the Army.  I really liked the 5 bottom semi-mounted plow.  Made finishing dead furrows so much easier.  Within two years after I left Dad moved off the farm and started custom work.  He kept the 966 with all it's implements, the 715 and the Ford 350.  Everything else was sold.

I like that picture.  I think my first toy tractor was a 966 Hydro.  My Mom has a picture of me at Christmas when I was very young with the 966 still in the blue box.  I played with it alot and did a lot of damage to it.  I still have it and it's now been restored, wish I still had that blue box it came in.

That’s awesome you still have it! Those IH toys still in boxes bring a good amount of money.

You should get a coolant filter on there.
