Nebraska1206
Viscosity Oil is the company that manufactured oils & lubricants for International Harvester, and then CaseIH for many years. They are the originator of HyTran, working with IH to develop the oil IH wanted for transmission/hydraulic oil. Within the last year or so, CNH has stepped away from Viscosity Oil, and gone to Shell to provide their oils & lubricants. There are dealerships that were not pleased at all to hear that CNH was going away from Viscosity & switching to Shell, so rather than continuing with the new lubricants from Shell, they elected to stick with the lubricant products they've known for many years, and continued to get them directly from Viscosity. One key advantage here, going with Viscosity lubricants, if your dealership went that route, they can continue to sell you the tried & true HyTran oil we all know, but at a significantly lower price, because the middle man (CNH) is no longer involved. Before this, not many people or CaseIH customers knew the name of Viscosity Oil. They're not new, they've been around a long time. Their products are tried & true. 5

How would you know the diff? 1
Nebraska1206
I can't speak for every dealer who stayed with Viscosity products, as far as price is concerned. I will say that where I work, the price for a 5 gallon bucket of HyTran is significantly less that what it used to be. Same goes for bulk.
dale560
Just looked online and viscosity oil parent company was actually owned by fiat for a time. Here are a couple material sheets I found online. The hytran made now is a synthetic blend that was formulated a couple years ago. It is not the same base as hytran from years ago.
Dirt_Floor_Poor
There is a small farm store near me that sells Champion brand lubricants. I was in there the other day and the champion hydraulic oil said “Hy Tran” on it. Not meets Hy Tran spec. It just said Hy Tran on the jugs. Can anyone comment on that? I didn’t even look at the price, I just thought it was strange that it said Hy Tran right on the front of it. Isn’t the name Hy Tran trademarked or something? acem
No comment on the above hytran but I recently bought a drum of viscosity hydraulic oil. It was $7xx plus tax. Local dealer says they're having a hard time getting oil through cnh at this time but viscosity oil is available. Thx-Ace

That's the way I understood it....Basically, the Viscosity Hy-Tran you can buy now is the last formulation they made before Shell took over with the new stuff. I would be willing to bet that Dealers are used to ordering truck loads of oil and can see that as being overwhelming to Shell. Over the years I have been lucky, met / learned to know a lot of guys within CNH at service schools an etc...Since then as an independent repair shop those nice fellers will still chat with me. Don't know if it still applies but back when I was a service manager at CaseIH dealer. We had dept. head meetings and at that point in time your oil orders (thru CNH) qualified you for certain parts discounts that had effect on a whole calendar year of business. Have had some interesting conversations in the last couple of months........
dale560
If you read one of the pages I posted the foreign company bought viscosity because they had a proprietary additive for hydraulic oil

CaseIH was selling two different types of Hytran Ultraction before the changeover to shell. One was the dinosaur based, the other synthetic. The synthetic was much more expensive than the dino based.

The buckets also have plastic handles now. Viscosity products have "AKCELA" or "TUTELA" logos on them. Many dealers still have old stock at least for the engine oils.

My local CIH dealer (chain) doesn't intend to handle the Viscosity stuff anymore. I was personally kind of over Hytran, as it's tough to stomach over $100 for a 5 gallon bucket; but I will miss the No. 1 SAE 30 engine oil. Michigan No Till
73.00/at local IH dealer for viscosity 5 gal bucket of Hy Tran. Straight 30W viscosity think it's a little more or less than the Hy Tran. That's what's used on everything I own. Never cared for Shell products, going way back to the Fire and Ice

We had dept. head meetings and at that point in time your oil orders (thru CNH) qualified you for certain parts discounts that had effect on a whole calendar year of business. Yup...we used to call it the "equity program". It worked somewhat like the cash rewards programs that most major credit card companies offer nowadays. You spend "X" amount of $$$ with CaseIH in parts and your dealership gets a % back at the end of the year. I can remember back in the mid-to-late 1990s(before CNH was formed), CaseIH had a big program for dealers to get into the bulk oil business. If the dealership's oil sales doubled within a year's time of getting into the bulk oil business, CaseIH would pretty much reimburse the dealer's cost for getting into the bulk oil business. Interesting story I heard about this program involved a CaseIH dealer in ND....they told their customers to buy very little oil the year before they got into bulk oil...then the next year they sold bulk oil to every man, woman, child, dog & cat in the dealer's territory. By the time the whole program was over, CaseIH had to pay for all the bulk oil equipment at the dealership as well as a new, fancy bulk oil delivery truck the dealership had purchased for bulk oil delivery to the farm. As far as synthetic Hy-Tran, that's been around in one form or another since the mid/late 1990s...Hy-Tran SSL. We used that when MX Maxxums came out new in the late 1990s....guys complained about the shuttle shift not being smooth when it was -20F. The SSL Hy-Tran make them work so much smoother in those cold temps. As far as the newer Hy-Tran, if its branded "Ultraction", its a Viscosity Oil-sourced product. Shell Hy-Tran is "Premium" labeled. Hy-Tran has went through several changes through the years....Hy-Tran Plus....Hy-Tran Ultra...Hy-Tran Ultraction....now Hy-Tran Premium. Hy-Tran Ultraction came about because of the hydro units in the CVT tractors would breakdown Hy-Tran Ultra in a matter of hours. The New Holland side of CNH hated Hy-Tran for years....they would always point to a couple European oil tests that Hy-Tran did not fare well in.

1480x3
My dealer is handling both, the new CIH oil and viscosity. I have been getting hy-tran and 15-40 delivered in bulk for probly 3 yrs. CIH price has dropped and is below viscosity at my dealer.

They had a fancy oil delivery truck a peterbilt service truck with bulk oil a custom combiner had setup and they bought it from him. The dealer actually got into fuel sales to but they got out of that.
