Bucket List Tractors

Sledgehammer

Recommended Posts

So the topic came up yesterday with a member finding a tractor on their “bucket list”. I’m sure we all have a list similar to this that if we had the funding we would pursue. What are say the top three tractors on your bucket list?  Don’t have to be actively pursuing anything but realistically what models would you look for and why?

I will start to be fair

1) My Grandfather’s 1086, he purchased it new and it’s never been out of the family

2) W450 gas, interesting tractor to me based on limited “standard” tread tractors in the Midwest and I’d like a plow day tractor for my 4btm #70 plow. Row crop could be a suitable substitute if the right one came along. Always liked the color combo and would be a big brother to my Farmall 350.

3) T-6 crawler(or something similar vintage), again, not many in the Midwest and I find them interesting.

I don't have much of a bucket to keep my list in, so it's only two tractors that would be a priority. A nice, clean 3588 & a Regular. If the subject was pre 1960 IH equipment, a bin would be required to keep the list in.

1) Farmall 1206 - One of the best-looking tractors ever.  There is just something about the paint scheme with the white grill and wheels.  Solar turbo...need I say more?

2) JD 4320 - Powerful, yet nimble.  The Super 4020.

3) Maybe a Ford 7000/7600/7610 - Decent power in a relatively small package.

I could add another 20 to this list with minimal effort.

Background: I have my father's C, and an OS-4 and OS-6 awaiting restoration

Not really on the list, because I think the owner will see to it that it's never found: My father's OS-4 that we restored together, and was sold out from underneath me before his dead body was cold, by his then wife. I have one now, but I'd give just about anything to get that one back.

1. O-4
2. O-6 to complete the collection of letter series Orchards (not including diesels)

3. GREEN!!!! Series II Steiger. Any model. Want it for parades. I want to mount a GIANT American flag on it, and tow a sign that says something to the effect of "This tractor and this manufacturer were the product of American ingenuity and innovation. Keep American strong, keep America independent keep your neighbors gainfully employed, and keep your money at home. Buy made in America, from American companies"

1. 5088 or 3688 or 1086 with PFC hydraulics.

2. 1026 or 1066 hydro. Or an 826 hydro or gear drive. Really miss the 826 I had but sold it.

3.  560 diesel

My bucket list has only one... 1970 Farmall 656 Hydro Diesel Gold Demo. If I had unlimited funds I know where to find the one I want but will take lots of cash.

1st on my list is my dad’s 1206. I know that I will probably never find it because I can’t find the serial number in any of his records.

2nd, 4386, I liked the 45 that dad had, but don’t want that V-8.

3rd, 5488, just bada$$

#1-1959 560 Diesel because I’m a 59 model

#2-1026 with a 2350 loader

#3-4186 because I ran one when I was just married and farmed

Mine are probably known from yesterday but I’ll chime in with my reasons.

1. 560 diesel with a wide front and flat top fenders. We had one originally and once we put the cab on the 1256 we put the fenders on it and it really looked sharp. Had to use glow plugs on an 80 degree day but could run all week on a tank of fuel.
2. 1026 hydro. I remember running one when I was in my teens for a neighbor that had one and I thought it was so cool that a large frame like that was a Hydro and it was so easy to run and didn’t need to use the clutch. It’s sold about five years ago and I really wish I would’ve bought it. Would definitely like for it to be a gold demo as I really think those are a neat tractor and paint scheme but if not it’s not the end of the world.
3. 1979 4586. We had one that we bought when it was only a year or two old and after the original motor going out numerous times dad put in a Cummins 903 motor and it ran great after that. I remember when I was a little kid looking up at that tractor and how I thought that was a monstrous tractor. I’d love to find it but unfortunately I don’t have the serial for it. The 903 conversion would be the tell sign of it and I’d recognize it if I saw it.

When i was a kid my dad sold seed and i remember going along on deliveries.  Stack bags in bins and barns and where ever.  Guy had a 460 diesel he had from new that was always polished up.   Always loved the look ofthat tractor,   It was on a sale here last year and couldnt afford to buy it,   went for like 7500 I think?   Probably should have bought it but I wussed out.  Only regrets i have in life are when i listened to people who told me.. Thats too much money for rent, or piece of equipment.  Should just go with my gut more.

So,   THAT 460 diesel where ever it is at,  and Id like a 1456,  But, prices are stupid on those now it seems and Id be interested in farming with it, not a show tractor.

1. 10/1486 Narrow Front (with the cab). No practical reason but I've always thought the few I've seen in pictures looks so goofy that they are cool. I'd like to have a line up of big narrow fronts eventually. Already have the 1206 and 1256 narrow fronts, just need a 66 and 86.

2. 10/1466 Narrow Front. Same reason as #1. Dad and the uncles used to have a 1066 NF, but it got away before I could remember it.

3. 72/7488. Probably an unpopular opinion but if I ever have the funds to buy one, I'd farm with it some. Obviously wouldn't pull it hard but it would be an awesome experience to run one in the field.

1. 130 Farmall, to round out the "30 series", with the 230 and 330

2. 350 Farmall, to go with above

3. 450 Farmall, to go with above

4. 544 Farmall Hydro diesel

5. 5220 Maxxum 2wd, with N in reverser. Let the 706D retire from running the mower conditioner and pasture clipping. And let me cut back on the use of antihistamine and decongestant by ~80%.

My bucket list tractors would be:

1.   A 656 LP. A friend had one and l just liked the looks of it.

2.  A 3788 2+2. l got to run a brand new one plowing wheat ground in 1981. Really enjoyed it mainly because it was so different from anything else l had run before.

3.  A JD 4440. l had one when l did custom CRP work for several years and just liked it a lot.

1: Still have my dad’s bought new 656 utility, still in the family.
2: Wanted a 1974 Oliver 1855. Experienced it and loved it. Another family member has it now.
3: Looked for a ‘97 Case IH 5250. Found it and no regrets. Couldn’t be happier.

986 From my youth. But chances of finding it aren't very good so really any 9,10,14,or 1586.

A narrow front gas 656 hydro to finally replace the one I had that got burned in 2005. I rebuilt it at the end of high school and it was burned at friends farm in July 2005.

Any 2+2 really including the Super 70 series ??

I would like to have a: F20, a SH, a gas start diesel preferably a 450. A narrow front 656 hydro, a 1256, that is more than 3 so I will stop now since I'll keep on going.

1) 1456

2) 1566

3) 1466

4) 1206

Those are the ones that interest me the most. Would be nice to have a backup for planter duty if something bad happened to the 10. Doubt if anything will but it's a good reason for another tractor, right?

Honorable mention;

5) 1026

6) 450

7) 350

I'm Mike and I'm a tractoraholic.

PM me    urgently, Sledge...I have two...one has a carby off an English "Vangaurd ' car circa mid 60's....which makes it most unusual...but I would let it go.... Way better tracks than ""Busted Knuckles "'old crawler....which features on the Restorations forum....Neither have blade gear.....which is just the way I like them.....
