M&W piston?

A buddy has the pan off his Grandpas M. He knows it has M&W pistons in it but Grandpa is no longer available to ask any more questions about it. There is a casting inside the piston of “AP-160”. He is trying to figure out if it is stock bore or oversized.  Any ideas?

From what I can decipher from my ancient M&W book the AP 160 came in a sleeve and piston kit numbered SP 60. Says Hi T whatever that means.  The SP 60 kit is 4" bore and standard was 3 7/8". 6.4 to 1 compression ratio vs 5.6 std. 247 to 264 cubic inches and goes from 36 to 53 belt HP . The sleeve and piston set was $95.42 in 1980.

M+W did not make standard bore pistons for your M. Most every dealer sold them. They were probably the best available at the time.

That's what's in Dad's '51 M sitting out in the shop, M&W Add Power sleeves & pistons.  I put the decals on the Cub Cadet 70, it REALLY needed a boost in HP.

I bought new old stock IH Fire Crater's to go in my Super H, goes from 3-1/2" bore to 3-9/16", 164 to 169 cid,  there's a compression boost too, supposed to be 39 pto hp vs 33 pto stock.  I just couldn't put cheap imported Chinese junk in MY tractor.

You might have just got damn lucky.  Please check the crankshaft for M&W markings as the AP160 should be the piston number for a 4" piston in a Hi-T kit.

Greg

Someone was saying that the M&W crankshaft was able to see that is what is in an engine from the outside. I am assuming there is something different where the front pulley mounts ? Anyone know what the visible difference is ?
