On a side note, our POS dive bar is a mile down the road from me.............Don't care for the current owner and haven't been in there in 20 years, anyhow he put a sign up out front recently................"God Bless us.......Us simple Folk"   That was right after that agtalk post, first time I drove by it, I laughed my A$$ off.

AC sold a lot of product around here back in the day.  They were the clear Number 3 Farm Equipment company after JD and IH.  As Many WD's and WD45's as there were M's and Super M's.  Don't get me wrong as I would rather have a M or Super M but I am acknowledging AC's strong presence.  For a state such as NY that had dairy as the number one form of agriculture AC stubbed its toe seriously as it exited the hay and forage equipment line along with materials handling (manure spreaders).  If not top notch AC's forage equipment was more often than not passable.  A few AC dealers also had NH so they did not miss a beat but most did not have access to a good hay and forage short line.  It was one of the nails in the coffin for AC when the 1980's came.  If I had to guess Gleaner outsold IH in terms of combines at least in this region during the 1970's.

I'm ignorant. Can someone catch me up on the "simple folk" reference?

This "Revolutionary" 18 spd transmssion was brought up on agtalk in a discussion about the proto type 8000's Allis built with Komatsu engines, and one guy claimed Deere almost bought Allis because of it. I never heard of such a thing a questioned it wanting to know more because it sounded really far out...............Well I was made fun of by this person and called a "Simple Guy"...............What ever the h*ll that means.  I also never did find out anymore about anymore of it.................So now it is somewhat of a joke.

You dug deep in the archives to find that one!

Actually I didn’t have to dig at all.  I was just googling Allis Chalmers prototypes and this thread was my first or 2nd hit so i read it.
