International 585XL Tractor

Recommended Posts

Was the International 585xl (not case IH) available in the USA? I can't seem to find out much about them other than in other countries.

I was doing some reading in my Red Tractors book last night and it said the 85 series was never sold under the IH name in the USA just as Case IH after the merger. I know that there is one exception to this though and that would be the 385 which was sold for one year under the IH name. We owned one quite a few years ago.

I have a 1981 585 Doncaster that I bought as it was still a genuine IH tractor before the Case IH period. All I know is the 85 series straddled both eras and there were some panel differences in the latter years. No doubt there may have been some mechanical updates but they remained pretty much the same

Seems North America was the only place that did not get the IH 85 series / 85XL cab other than the IH 385(no XL cab) as mentioned.

I have an op manual that is for 385,484,584,684,784,884,Hydro 84.....

Not sure why NA didn't badge 85 series until merger. The solid red H pattern 84 series were the IH 85 series everywhere else.

1987 for XL cab, on Case International tractor in NA.

I actually bought a 585xl the other day on a auction. Not sure why or how it got to the US. It's pretty rough shape but I thought it was pretty neat since you don't see them here

Our service manual set (GSS-1416-B )covers 385, 454, 464, 484, 574, 584, 674, 684, 784, and the 87 Hydro.

Appears to be the pre-sell out, lineup of the Doncaster line.

Lots of Euro stuff has been imported. I saw a really nice 4210 with the L cab (the basic no AC factory cab we did not get here)

I don't know I just looked and I didn't see any 85 series that weren't Case IH and listed in NA. When you look under IH it shows some but when you click on them they are actually Case IH

Thanks it's definitely not something you see around here at all. Looked kinda neat beside our 4210. First and last of the xl cabs for Doncaster

Agreed, have a 385 IH with original dealer stickers. The 2200 loader is CIH so it was awful close.I also know that it was bought new for the property we got it from.

I wouldn't mind that in my yard...my preference would be the New Zealand version of the IH 85 series (XL cab with the US/Canada grill & lights)

Very nice pair of tractors you have there....I’m guessing the 585 has 36 or 38 inch rears ???? ....most of ours down here were on 30 or 34 inch.

That one sure looks like a European spec tractor to me.....ours have the headlights in the hood either side of the IH badge.

(different lighting regulations for different countries.)

At some point in the 80’s , the 885xl was getting expensive and a little difficult to source for IH here in NZ so they commissioned a local company to turbo charge the 685 and bring it up to equal power with the 885.

IH backed the warranty etc and sold quite a bunch of them, but the turbo on the 239 engine never did lug as well as the 268 in the 885.... I must try to find a tidy one to photograph for you guys......not much different to look at, just had the hairdryer Under the hood, straight exhaust pipe and “Turbo 85” decals.

You may know this already, but “Porsche” (the car company) had a lot of design input into that XL cab..( quite possibly the whole thing, I’m not completely sure).

I read somewhere that what is the 85 series all over the rest of the world is badged as an 84 series in North America so as to avoid having to have the new line of tractors tested at Nebraska.

I have no idea if it correct  though.

If they are UK imports they will have headlights in the lower grill and side indicator lights on the side of the cab and the biggest give away a Pick Up Hitch with either a hook or drawbar.

I dont know how you guys manage  without them.

It does have the pick up hitch and also has a hook on the one end of the drawbar

Probably a UK import?

I think many European  tractors have a diffent hitch again.

I dont suppose it had a number plate when it arrived?
