2 starter #'s for TD9. Which one to use?

Just bought a used TD9 dozer. It has a Delco Remy starter # 1108925 which has had "issues" and worn corners off the flywheel teeth. My parts book says it fits TD9's up to serial # TDCB 43521.  This machine ends in serial # 44576 so it makes sense that this is the wrong starter for the machine. It should be a Delco Remy 1108940.

BUT...  I am suspicious that the engine may have been changed/updated at one time. It is stamped serial # TDCBM 16175. Is there any way to tell which is the correct starter for THIS engine from this engine serial number?

Would the starter for a D350 engine fit onto the D335 engine to get away from the manual lever start?  (5 years newer).

You will still need the gas start procedure if that’s what your saying?

92 series was D282 with direct start

Recall something about different number of drive gear teeth also, might have been TD6’s?

Maybe a 91 series has a push button start? Just a thought.

OK, I have this figured out.  The 1951 D335 manual hand lever to engage the starter is still there but disconnected and a push button/ relay block was installed.  Previous owner had starter issues so I thought that my starter off the D350 would work- 12 teeth etc.  Next problem is that the solenoid (on the D350 unit) wouldn't fit under the fuel filter element base which is a single filter for the Bosch fuel pump.  But to solve this, I am taking off the dual fuel filters from the D350 which has the same mounting bracket but "curved" higher so the D350 starter will fit underneath it. Need to plug 2 lines to one side of this element or I can add more fuel lines to obtain a primary and secondary filter system. Not sure if it matters with the single filter Bosch pump.

Yes, the D350- TD9-91 series was push button start. The D335-TD-9 will be, now.

Will let you know the outcome.

This is what it looks like now with the D350 dual filters/bracket mounted.  Now, a newer type starter with solenoid will fit to update this monster.  Still need to rig up fuel lines.  Waiting on the new starter to arrive.

I have a WD9 with engine serial around 14500 and it has the #1108925 starter.

My dual filters on the td6 (49) barely miss the manual starts wiring post on top, doubt that a solenoid would fit?

Does the filter housing base have a noticeable curve upwards or seem "flat"?  Mine has a curve which allows a solenoid type starter to fit on.

  • 3 weeks later...

It's a weekend project and slow going.  Starter and new batteries turn it over fine.  Almost kicks on gas. Got the carb off now and cleaning it but trying to get the other carb on the newer TD9-91 retrofitted to this one (see my carburetor posting).  The "newer" style carb has a Primer/flow control which should be better but the venturi has a chip out of the casting.   Will give it another go this Saturday but the weather here is record breaking heat and it's all outside (ie. no garage- no AC).   After the carb the magneto or timing may have to be adjusted.  Will keep you posted.

And yourself? Track issues all solved?

BTW, it's taking 5 or 6 shots at the can to get this message posted. Even after I cleared my cache twice.

There was another one at auction I think I mentioned to you before- is that sale over?  Must be a decent set of tracks/sprockets at a decent price somewhere in your part of the world?   50% UC, at least, would be better than what you got?

i see now, you have that old bosh pump on there so that is a very early 335 engine. from early 1940's.  those engines do not have an actual solenoid. just the push button solenoid on top of starter. those pumps only had one filter. all fuel lines are different. plus there is a shield for under those filters for the ih pump. plus the primary filter has an adapter at the bottom of filter to make it fit in that housing. many are missing and the filter flopping around doing nothing.

You can see in the picture how I added the dual filters on one bracket to solve the starter issue. The secondary (right) filter is empty and blocked/plugged off.  But the original single filter that came with the beast had a Fram C1161PL filter which crosses to a Wix 33148. That is the same filter used on the IH fuel pumps. So I wonder if this will be an issue with the Bosch pump? (I can't see that being a problem, it's nice and tight and doesn't leak--- but???)

Agreed.  The machine serial # says its a 1951 but I think someone put an older engine in it at one time as the Engine serial # is TDCBM16175.  It's been doctored with, for sure.

should work. just run through the sediment bowl then through transfer pump then through final left filter and to pump. those early bosh pumps had the starter mounted in front of bell housing instead of behind.

Great. Thanks for the comments. Quite helpful.  There are some other parts from my TD-9-91 that I intend to changeover onto this machine to update it (somewhat).

Final hookup with fuel lines connected and new starter (with solenoid). Later on I hope to switch the dash/controls and air breather from my TD9-91 onto this machine to gain more leg room in operators seat.
