It ain't the twenty, it's how they were spent. How and where they were raised. But I agree, most wouldn't make it through the first day.

What did they travel a 1000 miles? Heat, storms, floods, injuns, 20 or 30 miles a day? Real life sure is different from movie cattle driving. More like 5 to 10 miles a day. I have driven a number of different trails that were used, and I can’t imagine trailing cattle like that. I HATE trailing cattle to start with, but 100 days plus? That’s why they used so many young kids. The older guys would help get them somewhat trail broke, then the kids would take over. Not for me!!

oleman
It not just farming, it's animals in general. I had a folder on LUCY a free little dog we had for 13 years, she died in 2018. The vet bills over her lifetime were almost $2,000. My new standard, God is the Vet for all free animals.

mike newman
the high's and low's of being a male sire........ ....had to shoot one here,t'other day.....He had gone down, arse over kite , off a bank, into stones and into a mess of "barbary " trees, cut down to about a foot above ground level, and into a mess of 3to 4 inch dia trunks off this another English , totally useless weedy type of multi leader prickly tree .... ..hence a broken hip... hence the bullet.....hence the extraction, and subsequent burial detail......hence another couple of K fiscal loss..... ray54
From 67 to 75 my dad moved a 100 cows 15 to 18 mile to barley stubble that was about as far you could get them in one day. He bought 20 foot OK built goose neck in Oct of 75, hauled them after that. He always told me if you cannot afford to have one die, you better sell them all. Ran yearling heifers on brush patch 20 head for 9 months on 600 acres. Wild and wooly country. Wet spring did not get in to see all of them for a month, one has a hind leg swing. Broke high up the leg. By condition had been this way a week or more. She was up and moving. She made it to even have a calf. Leg was as crocked as all get out, but she made a living. I believe we put her on grain when the calf was weaned and we ate her. One rented pasture came with a 300 gal butane tank as a water trough. Top had 18 or 20 inches had been cut out. It sat against a bank about 8 foot high, on a dozer cut jeep trail. The cattle and deer had a trail coming off the bank. Another yearling, she got push o feel. Was upside down in the trough. The odds of her falling in and landing like that are not good but did not help her. A neighbor that was to old to tend his cows and had a city friend take them a bale or 2 of hay "when he got around to it" had a calf dead and upside down in one of the V style hay feeders mangers. So as Jake put I try not to even think I have seen it all anymore. My eldest's sons FIL was a high school English teacher his whole life in southern California. Now retired up here in central Cal in a beach town. But a lot of old timers with 50 to 200 cows all up and down the coast line. He is always asks lots of questions. Has asked me the how many, I have over looked his lux pas and give a round number. He got in a conversation with a women and asked................she was not happy. She gave him both barrels I guess. So the next time he saw me he asked what he had done wrong. So many variables with crop farming asking how many acres does not bring up the same feeling, at least with me.

I really meant no disrespect No apology is necessary sir, all is good. I am sure you didn't know that out here it is considered bad manners to ask a man how big his outfit is or how many cows he runs. More than likely he will tell you in a casual conversation, it just isn't considerate to ask. I have probably even mentioned a number in a past thread or two. I was not trying to be rude by not answering. It is one of the "codes of the west" that came from an era of what I feel to be better times in this country. Anyway, you'll never know if you don't ask, right??

Heck in my area I've been asked countless times how many acres we're farming and how many cows and cattle on feed we have. Never had a problem answering. mike newman
Well Jeff, we have just loaded six (6!!!) beautifull calves for two different life style blocks.....calves are almost R1 status...big and totally quiet.....This leaves us with nine calves , two old girls that evaded capture from our now, lost, lease block, one "freezer " animal and a house cow..... ...however, now the beef price has ramped right up, and several cockie's around the district have seen the old Cook's calves...how well they are treated etc..how quiet they are....thus she has orders for 50 odd allready ,for next year.....That has perked her up !!! Our fearless Leader , whose qualifications to lead this country, include working at a 'fish and chip' shop and then doing a Left Wing apprentice ship under a recent British Socialist Prime Minister, Tony Blair......has decreed that "cow" numbers havve to be reduced by 15%...this will save the planet....... Now you might think that is just left wing garbage.....as I did.....BUT...since we have got rid of 90% of our cattle.....the temperatures have cooled considerably...We are having severe frosts, for our area...frozen water pipes..... 886 on feedout duty , most reluctant to fire up in the mornings, with below 8 degree temps.....and so on.... The possibility of this situation could be put down to our coldest month..July....I guess......but who knows...... The bovine caused globull warming is so much BS I don't even know how to answer any more. Sorry so many of your cows had to leave. A great part of your beautiful country look ideal for beef production. I am glad to hear your prices have recovered some. To work hard all year to produce high quality beef only to have someone tell you what they think it is worth??? Two uprights with wire in between and probably a dropper in the middle. A sort of cheap "temporary" gate that may last a couple of generations - with various fixes and rebuilds. Causes all sorts of patent fastenings too but been known to open itself just when needed closed. Caused me to write a spreadsheet that calculates the dimensions for DIY pipe gates, tells you where to cut and bend even to the angle of the bends for the "N-stay" if used. Almost no scrap pipe left around here and the last cocky gate has gone. yak type bulls With Bos indicus blood - IIRC you have a term about "ear"? Usually with at least somewhat pendulous penises which can get damaged on the ends, , swell and not retract which leads to further damage - so "belled dick" .
