D282 liner protrusion tool

I have a late d282  without the wide flange on top. From what I read there is a tool that is used to draw the liner in and stop it at the required height. I have a machine shop and could quickly make one of these plates if I had a bit of information from someone that had one or had used one. Can I assume that it is a round plate slightly larger diameter than the liner and is recessed so that there is a lip around the liner that would bottom out on the block leaving the liner protruding the required amount? if so, how may thousands of an inch?

Go over to Yesterdays tractors discussion forum and click on IHC and Farmall. There’s a crusty old codger over there would know all about it if it exists. After he gets done talking about hauling heavy out of the coal mines, or about the Fords he built, he’ll tell you what you want to know. Probably way more than you want to hear.

Bret, here is a picture of the tool that's shown in the IH Engine service manual (ISS-1040-1) dated May 1968. We did not use a tool, I used a dial indicator holder to measure the protrusion of the sleeves.

Wrong tool. Wrong sleeves. That is the older version.

That tool is FES-49 for the light press sleeves, the tool for the heavy press sleeves is FES-24-6, no picture is shown in the engine service manual for the FES-24-6. Snoshoe, do you have a picture of the tool for the heavy press sleeves.

He would probably know that dimension you’re looking for also. He ran a machine shop for 60 years and is pretty knowledgeable.

No. Do you have spec for sleeve height for heavy press sleeves?

Heavy press sleeves are .035-.045 flange above crankcase. I used this setup to check the protrusion of the sleeves. We miked the original flanges and shims, the new sleeves were the same, we used the new shims that were the same as the ones we took out, it came out perfect.

I haven't received my manual yet so maybe one of you could answer another question. I just pulled the liners and am cleaning up the block face and discovered cylinders 1&2 have an L stamped next to them and an H next to 3 thru 6. Might this be differences in bore or in height of liners?

Differences in bore. There were three sizes. Sleeves still vary that much. I am not aware of any manufacturer sorting them anymore.

OK you said block face. I don't know what those indicate. As I recall sleeve sizes were indicated on side of block. When you get your manual you can let me know IIRC.

This is great info.  Been looking for just this.

Might have yo replace one liner in my 3800 d282.

So, more info and photos would be great.

@mrbrettbaker did you have a puller or did you make one?
