bitty
I am thinking about getting a sharpener like this for the sawmill blades . If I can sharpen 10 blades 4 times each or more it's paid for instead of throwing the blades out .....

Rawleigh99
Hmm, from wood-mizer so it must be pretty expensive! A pretty cool machine though! If you could get into sharpening blades for other people as well it could really pay for itself.

My late father in-law had a sharpener and was doing blades for various sawmills before he passed away close to 30 years ago. They sold the sharpening tools after he passed away. I'm just calculating the 25 per blade and if it's reusable after it's dull once that adds up quickly. I have around 8 dull blades now

For my salary I can't argue with that 😁 I think it's possible to get 8-10 sharpenings per blade before they are brittle and snap. At that it will be definitely better to sharpen them. I'd guess once setup you can do a half dozen blades in short order. If only doing one at a time it will take more time per blade by 2x or so

Just remember in your calculations that each sharpening reduces set and tooth hardness.
yellowrosefarm
Even though I have a WM sharpener that came with my mill, I have never set it up. There is a guy here who sharpens them for $6, and I don't use that many. He says they are only good for 2 or 3 sharpening's before the tooth is to small to get the proper angles. Does he not set the angle after sharpening?

Yes on the set, but I think he said something about the gullet angle getting too small for the grinder to do. It's been quite a while since that conversation, but he has rejected a couple of my blades, saying they had been sharpened as much as possible already. I took it that they aren't like a chainsaw chain that can be sharpened down to almost nothing and still work. This guy saws oak fence boards for a living and sharpens blades on the side. The extent of my blade knowledge is that it cuts, or it dives and needs to be changed.
