Absent Minded Farmer
When did IH stop using metal badges for model designations & start using decals? Mike
IH Forever
I'm sure others will chime in with something more official. But I believe around 1972 with the 66 series. I have a 1972 656 which has decals. I think most of the 56 series had metal emblems still.

For some reason I had always thought the Hydro 70 had the metal badges. Haven't been able to find one, so that might be why. Mike
nepoweshiekfarmalls
IH Forever is correct. The last of the 656 and a few 544 had decals. The introduction of the 66 series was the start of decals instead of emblems. The hydro 70 was a rebadged 666 hydro. All the 666 had decals. Case IH provided decals for the 06 and 56 series to replace the emblems (perhaps they still do). So, that adds to the confusion on the decal introduction as well. Long Farms
'71 with intro of 66s came decals. Also dropped chrome shifters for painted silver. Seems like grab handles were no longer plasti coated but painted black too. Start of IH starting to cheap on tractors. Late model Badged 544 and 656s also had IH style hyd coupler blocks and square fender flashers.
BZtractor
The first 1206s had decals. Then went to metal plates
shot_gun_red
My brother used to have a 70s puller when they were a paper that had a picture of a nf early 1466 with emblem's. I think the tractor was Kays delight.

Figured that out the hard way. A few years back I found, what I thought were the metal ones, at the Parts Depot. Got all excited & put a pair on order. Was rather lost when I went down to the dealership to pick them up & was handed a large manilla envelope. Peered in the envelope & there were two decals in the heavy plastic bags. Aaaaack! At least I learned the R91 variant is the metal badge & the R95 or 96 is the decal. Still have the dumb things somewhere. Wasn't going to send them back & pay a restocking fee. Also adds to the decal collection. Always a plus. Mike

Went to look at the scans from my 1206 filmstrip, because I had thought they were decals, too. It really looks like they are lightly embossed numbers on a square metal plate affixed to the side panel. Now, I'm going to guess that's a pre production 1206 in the film, so I can not say for certain if that's what was on the production units or not. Also my first & certainly not my cleanest scan which makes it a bit harder to discern. Was still using a telecine to convert & that just wasn't producing quality images. Those two dark spots on numbers 1&2 drove my batty until I tore the telecine apart & found out they are indentations in the plastic matte screen. acem
The 1456 i had never had emblems. It had stickers with no holes in the metal for emblems. My early 1066 has chrome shifters. Dads friend bought it new and they are original. Thx-Ace

I remember that the early 1206's had a decal for the model identification, but was the Farmall on the side of the hood a metal emblem? Yes, the Farmall or International emblem on 1206's was always a metal emblem during production
Ditch Digger
When did they switch from the vinyl graphics to the metal emblem on the 1206’s? Does anyone know the serial number break?

acem
Idk. I'll have to go look and the next few days will be crazy. Trying to get my rice sprayed, fertilized, levees pulled, levee gates installed and the water started to flood it. Im really behind this year. If I don't get it posted in a few days, just remind me. Rick G.
Quite a few years ago, I’m thinking perhaps 2005 or 2006, I saw a 1066 with the older style shifter levers on the right side like the shifter levers used on like a 1206 or 806. I remember thinking like W-T-F?????? Lol…. Who the h_ll would do something like that? They must have had an ‘06 series in their past and must have been deeply in love with the older style ‘06 series shifter levers. I don’t know what all would have been entailed under the skin in converting it back to that??? Or, is it possible that that 1066 may have had the entire transmission section casing and innards of an ‘06 series and I just didn’t realize that at the time? Would it bolt up??? Crazy. I do remember that tractor as a whole being a complete pile of dog sh_t however. This bastardized 1066 was sitting on the lot at the Yoder and Frey auction yard in Archbold, Ohio. Anyone else here remember seeing that abortion 1066 sitting there by chance? That would be too funny. You wouldn’t have forgotten it if you did. Having said that, I have, over the years, seen several 1206s converted / upgraded over to the ‘66 series shifter levers.

I saw a 1466 open station once with chromed shifter and TA levers. It was on a flat bed trailer at a truck stop in Ohio. I assumed someone chromed the levers as a mod. Up until reading this here I never knew the early ‘66 series came from factory with chrome shifters.

Would it bolt up??? The bell housing bolt pattern is the same from the first 706 all the way through the last 3688. I think it might even go farther than that as I recall a 66 or 86 series front married to a Magnum powershift transmission and rear end. From 06 through 66 they were virtually the same tractor, main differences being engine and hood styling. The "sister" to our 856 was 856 from the bell housing forward, but 806 from the bell housing back. If you weren't imagining things, I suspect if you took a closer look at that "1006" it was probably all 806 from the bell housing back. I think the 66 series hood panels would bolt right on the 806 steering console. You would notice a bit of an external mismatch at the bell housing, as the 06-56 series are about 2" narrower right there.
Eason
The very early 574 and 454 had metal emblems. I believe this was the last american IH tractor to have emblems.
