FFA 660 gas restoration

Recommended Posts

thanks iowaboy1965 I made a royal mistake, I meant as you say a 660, 80 hp farmall rowcrop.,  I also was thinking the donor 560 farmall could be converted to a 560 international, but it would still have the rowcrop back wheels, and would need a drawbar, as the fasthitch, with DB would be put on the 660.

LORENZO, i have the air cleaner if you wanted.  yes its about 3" taller.  really dont know of any differences in the steering or dashes. same steering box same drag link same dash. only difference is in the steering wheels, 560 has 18" while 660 has 20 ". they both even use the same grill. just those side panels are teller by about 3". taller rad larger fan and fan pulley also. but ya its a taller tractor with 34" rubber vs 30" on the 560.

Here’s what I mean about the steering and dash , also the throttle and shifter are different ,

the gear box ( in the circle ) is not on a 560 . The steering on a 560 comes  out where the red arrow is pointing .

Steering on the 660 is much lower , very unrefined  looking . None of that gear box / contraption is on the 560.

all that stuff is exactly the same , there is no difference. its all the same same steering box same dash .  i have both tractors.

maybe you are talking farmall? ... but i know both 560 and 660 internationals it all the same parts. only the steering wheel is 2" bigger and reproductions are not available. some guys use the 560 steering wheel on the 660 but it dont look right.

Yes i'm talking of taking a 560 farmall "row crop" with it's different steering, throttle, brake pedals, diff cover, seat, W/It's different gear stick, front axle and bolster, hyd valves, and install these on a 660 international "non row crop", along w/fast hitch to make the 660 a farmall "row crop", which ih did not make. but I believe It's just a bolt together installation, except for maybe adding a little length to the steering shaft, as the 660 is a little taller.

Good question.  The planetary set up was not used again until the 1566, if I remember correctly.

i think it was just the easiest way to get more power out of that 282 diesel engine without redesigning the whole tractor till the 706/ 806 came out.

Dale I felt pretty much the same about the farmall 560 even tho I had never been around one until I decided I wanted to own one for a while just to experience for myself the progression of technology.  Now that I have one I kinda like it. For some things at least.

I suppose after all the problems with the 560 farmalls when they came out that they were overshadowed by the much better 806 and newer after they were introduced?

Usually I'm against this kinda thing but The 660 row crop does sound kind of interesting. Maybe I'm mellowing out? ........nah I doubt it.

In my mind a 660 row crop is impossible. With out the planetaries it's not a 660. With out the bar axles it's not a row crop. The engines are basically the same. Running faster in the 660. The planetary reduction is a big part of that.

I never said anything about removing the planetaries.  (Start with a 660).  Switch out the differential/transmission cover to a 560 Farmall row crop, the complete steering apparatus, front axle and steering bolster, other associated parts that designate a 560 Farmall row crop tractor.  All Farmalls are row crop.  That means they have the clearance ability to cultivate corn, and adjustable for row width spacing, turning brakes, and twin front wheels to go between two rows of corn, or, single, dual, or wide adjus.. What I am proposing for an IH 660 Wheatland/Standard is these abilities from an IH 560 Farmall row crop tractor.  This would make an IH 660 Farmall row crop-.  If you want the big fenders, I am thinking since the rear axles are there from the 660 you can simply bolt them back on.  Here are some photos of someone who has taken the rear fenders off, moved the front axle and bolster forward to the front of the frame rails and made it look like a row crop, however, they did not change the steering.  I remember seeing a 660 where someone put a fast hitch on it, which should be a simple bolt on assembly.   The rear wheels using 18 x 34 rear tires, (same as an early 806).  The 660s rear wheel centers can be reversed along with the rim for different row widths.  This would make it a row crop tractor with adjustable for width rear wheels with planetaries (other companies w/planetaires adjust tread width same) it doesn't need bar axles to be a row crop. Of course the 660 Farmall was not available from the factory, although I believe it is simply a "bolt together" project.

EHauck 122, I'm sorry if I'm hijacking your post.  I don't mean to, I must not be explaining myself well.  I enjoy discussing this.  I don't have a 660 but you are the first one I've seen to somewhat disassemble one.  I would sure like to see someone do it. ( I am too far gone) Can you figure out how much the hydraulic assembly is raised over a 560 Farmall, because this is what would support the steering wheel and I'm still wondering why there is a 3" cast iron shim underneath the grill in front and it looks like only a 1" shim under the fuel tank support.  Of course this would require a raise to the hydraulic valve assembly in the back making the steering wheel somewhat higher than a 560 Farmall.   This will only work with the 18 x 34 inch back wheels.

Here are some photos of tractors with the back wheels turned out and two other photos I mentioned above.

I think youv'e made it pretty plain what you had in mind. Just put forth my thoughts.

In my opinion,  what makes a row crop tractor a row crop; is the adjustable bar axles.  Infinite adjust for row spacing with the bar axles.  You can change the spacing on any utility tractor a little bit by moving the rim position.  But, that will not make a utility a row crop!  In my opinion,  a row crop 660 would have planetary final drive and adjustable bar axles.  My opinion.  Yours may vary.....

The other companies that have reversible back wheels to change row widths, off the top of my head are oliver, MM, Case, White and of course 1939 ford and ferguson, oh I almost forgot, IH cub,A,B, and all later numbers, avery, and too many others to mention.

I am ignorant regarding these tractors.  What exactly are those huge hubs.  I figure the planetaries are buried under them, but am I seeing the wheel centers and weights?  That picture is making me want to find one of these tractors.

They are all one piece weighing about 1000 lbs. I dont know why they were made so big. They wrap around and cover up most of the planetaries.

Those hubs are standard or did IH make different versions?

The 34 inch wheels seem more common but these were an option. supposedly there were a 26 inch "light" version but I've never seen any.
