Remember the New Zealand Opossum ??? few pics

Recommended Posts

The  Ministry of Primary   Industries  are always on the hunt for Bovine TB  reactors...thus a crew were working at the Rainbow Station whilst we were up there.....Helicopter...ground crew of eight blokes   who were dropped in the valleys  with 50 traps each.....They were duly picked up later in the day and again dropped back next morning....to check traps and bring out the  opossums.....Oposums had to be plucked ...then taken for analysis by some bunch of , no doubt , unshaven "boffins ''of dubious political note......This to determine if there were any TB carriers amongst them...Tally was just under 600 for the week...The opossum  is actually  the  Australian  model  (!)...imported in the early 1900's.....and it /they quickly spread around NZ ...far better tucker here  than in Australia...with its wall to wall sweet F all ....

The "pod' under the helicopter takes 150 KG;'''about 300 lbs  ...in goes baggage ..two dogs and all the traps for  a couple of blokes at a time.....

The handsome, stooped, bloke with "lowes"  T shirt and Remington etched  belt buckle is yours truly.....

You blokes familiar with the US model opossum...should clearly see the quite different animal.....

Mike

Nothing at all like the opossum in the US. Yours even have lots of color variation.

And we can colour coordinate them around NZ. East Coast North Island ones are a different colour (dark brown) than Auckland province ones ( grey). Helps you know where you should you get lost - just look at the road kill and you could know which part of NZ you are in lol.

Our farm has a lot of willows along a river boundary and the kids can use up 130 .22 bullets in one night and still leave live ones behind. Rifle barrel is a tad warm when finished

it appears your possums can afford more luxurious fur coats than what ours wear.

I remember when the wife and I were in Australia, we were in a shop, and the wife was checking out the furs, found one she really liked. We were quite amazed that it was opossum. Definitely different texture than the big fat one I saw in the yard the other night.

The Nth American " opossum  is from the  Phalangeridae  genus , a marsupial, and is an "omnivore"( eats all kinds of crap ), meanwhile the Australian "possum" also a marsupial  ,is from a different genus , Didelphidae, and is a "herbivore". ( grass, leaves  shoots etc)

I'm 1 bullet away from falling foul of our socialist Govt's new rules. So count my lucky stars shes only a 10 shot mag. But I'm not convinced Aunty cinda can teach an old dog new tricks.

I live an  HOA community and feed the critters constantly in our outside the fence back yard area. I assume it to be Possums, Coyotes, and Coons.  They make off with whole turkey leftovers, prime rib bones and ham bones so I know they are large animals.  In the 40's and early 50's, my Uncle who passed away in 1972 supplemented his poor dirt farm with the trapping of animals in his swamp area.  BY 1955 the animal fur industry in Low Country South Carolina USA was dead!
