I like mufflers so much I'm literally the only puller that runs a muffler. But on my 1456 I used a whole saw and made the muffler strate through,  its still way more quiet that a strate stack but it has more whistle now and I like the big black oval look. I have a black oval on everything but the wheatland 20200704_162713.thumb.jpg.cd8cd5cbb206065c85238245a4403206.jpg20200611_205952.thumb.jpg.14084bd4ee25c85b0ce36bd5de094315.jpg20190803_192508.thumb.jpg.62b24aa77b9b2d9043e26c12576fad7e.jpg

Wearing hearing protectors sucks, usually gives me a headache. Put a muffler on everything and don't be an idiot juvenile.

Truth.  But.  Even with a muffler those older tractors make enough noise if they are being worked hard that hearing protection is advisable.  Been there and done that, many years ago.

Is it pretty obvious?

I got the chrome 45 degree straight pipe from Shelhammer Imp in O'Neill NE for my 966 soon after I bought it around 1984.

Probably aftermarket, never thought to look for IH stamping.

Yes it is. No doubt about what you are seeing.

Sadly no more youngsters in this house, the missis had some health stuff and no more baby making. But with a 1456 anything is possible. Still vote for muffler. I even like a black stack over a chrome one like on my wheatland20201002_133610.thumb.jpg.b87038f024af63048d98e54ce6236c9f.jpg

Dad put a muffler on the 1256 in the early seventies when it was still an open station.  That DT 407 was really quiet and smooth with that muffler.

Friend of my dad had a 1456 with the muffler and a Hiniker 1300 cab.  It was cranked a fair amount.  It wasn't really loud, but the whistle was there, and it did sound serious.  And like you said, smooth.

Yeah a muffler really shuts them up...........big difference after putting it on mine. Atleast the little neighbor kids aren't running to hide in the ditches when we throttle it up to grind feed now...............

Generally, my rule of thumb is:

Turbo = black, straight pipe

N/A = muffler

I make exceptions for certain applications and the 56-series tends to be one of them.  I just think that they look right with the OEM muffler on them.

I have one very solid rule that doesn't really apply to this group: Deere two-cylinders should never have straight pipes. Full stop.  They are about enough to turn a sane man mad!

For those asking about the factory 66 series chrome pipe option.

Here's the one I ran across in late 2019. Was doing some internet searching with the part number and found that Bates Corp had one. Needless to say I had to have it.

Parts book says chrome, but it's actually like a brushed stainless look, though it's not stainless.

Came in the original IH shipping tube. Pipe is 44in long, has matching raincap, and I believe clamp is there also.

I know it'd look good on a tractor, but don't have the heart to get it all sooty.
