Ian Beale
OK - someone has to fess up As a neighbour who used to fix them says - "you never actually fix a dozer. You just keep them going till the next thing". Fiat Allis 10. LHS sprocket spat the outer bearing and locked up and spun the dead axle that side. Wrecked the bull gear hub bearing area as well. We knew it had been run with a loose sprocket hub from measurements when I rebuilt the track frame pivots about 3000 hours ago. We didn't have a press to check them but they "rang" on the hammer test and the sprocket nuts went back on "FT". So we went with a second hand good pair. Also second hand inner final case and dead axle. And found that we weren't the first in the gear case as there were some "farmerisations". Interesting that I read of parts for the Fiat line being hard tofind in USA. In contrast we had located all parts and bearings needed in about 2 days and with a choice of three suppliers between new and second hand. One son owns a heavy equipment repair business and he did the job. Has all the press gear, which is above my tool box grade. Left hand side is back together, just needs track frame and track. But he found that the RHS sprocket was also loose on the hub and the second splined pair took some finding second hand. It is now here and I just have to wait till he comes past 9from the other side of Oz) to finish it. Mike Newman - due to an incorrect dead axle we now know that Fiat beefed things up in 10C's. I don 't know what else they changed. When I rebuilt the track frame pivots I found that the dead axle ones were badly worn on the underside. Not having the gear to pull them apart I got the gen on overhead welding and where that piece of slag is going to land just as you get the arc going. So I built them up with weld and used the bearing shells, bearing blue and a burr in an air grinder to cut them back. I didn't do a bad job by the one that came out. Ditto for the frame holes for the front equaliser pivots - the grease pipes were long gone there. Both being jobs I have done and hope to never have to do again. And now I know why what seems to the likes of me modern dozers are in wrecking yards - once you let them slip you can't retrieve them if you have to pay commercial fixing rates. WishIhada1466
Dad has been operating dozers almost solely since 77 or 78 when he got of the Navy. He has built alot of feet of terraces and waterways and a bunch of ponds and lakes. His Dad ran dozers as well until his death. The guys my Dad worked for for years ran three D6C's and a D8H. Early on they had some old D7 cable dozers. He worked for them until they got out of it. The last 6 or 7 years he has been working for a guy with later model equipment. They run two D6T's and two D6R's. They broke their record last year for the feet of terraces they had done in a year. I want to say it was 90,000 feet. I think they did something like 15'000 feet of waterways. Also built one good size lake and some ponds. I wish I could find pictures of Dad on the old D6C's. I know there is one when they had all the D6C's and the D8 on one job. Sometime I'll have to try and round up some of the old pictures we have. Dad and my Daughter from back in 2017. They just sold that D6 and replaced it with a D6T Dad with my daughter on top and Me and Dad in 86 on a D6C. D8K I'm overhauling the engine in. Started last year about this time but they had a truck go down and money went that way. Just started back on it last week.
