Artsway Hammer Mill

I have an artsway 475, that mechanically is an excellet grinder.  However, when grinding feed for cattle it litterally will grind 1/3 or more of the corn into flower, which is an issue when feeding cattle out of a self feeder. I have purchased multiple screens from 3/4 to 1 inch, lowerered to rpms of the tractor, increased the rpms of the tractor, sped up the feed auger speed, slowed to feed auger speed, and have ground with out the screen. The only thing that changes is the amount of whole corn in the feed sample.  The other issue im having with it, is the feed is not sliding in the mixing bin. when grinding/mixing feed it appears like to outside 6 in of the mixing bin is flower produced from the hammer mill.  I need help to try and find out how to stop this issue.  i have tried everything to try and resolve it, except buying a different grinder.  before anyone asks, i already gring 1 bale of straw per ton in my ration.  Any imput will be appreciated.  Thank you.

What moisture is the corn ? I don't have much insight in these but I think moisture changes how it grinds

What is the condition of the hammers ? Worn off hammers will grind but the machine will not perform as designed

hammers are not hardy worn leading edge is just barely rounded

I should have asked if this was a new problem or always been this way. You may be better off without the screen as 5488 said. If this issue just developed over time something is not functioning / moving material as it should.

the only grinder ive ever owned.(had artsway,ih,newholland, omc and lorenz) that would crack corn and not powder half of it was a lorenz. would like to get a roller mixer but then cant bulk up with hay. as far as the not mixing part the sides and cone probably have rust on them. i put a screen on the bottom side of unload auger to let flour drop out when filing my bulk bins for calves. then feed the fines to cows. pain in the but to do but priced new grinder and decided i could do a little extra work for the price and they could'nt guarantee new one wouldnt powder corn.

Does it handle grinding the straw ok ? Artsway said they had a temporary bearing on the auger that needed to be removed after a few loads and always be out before hay being ground. If it performs well and auger and so forth not worn or flighting gone I think I am out of ideas

I grew up with Gehl mixers so no experience with an Arts Way. But we experienced the same issue, even with no screen we could not get as coarse of a grind as we wanted for cattle. I think it’s the nature of a hammer mill, ideally you would have a roller mill.

At work we have hammer mill and roller mill. When we’ve had more demand than the capacity of the roller mill we’ve tried to make coarse corn with larger screens in the hammer mill. We can get the average micron size large but the standard deviation is way to high. Meaning we still had a portion that was closer to flour similar to what you’re seeing.

before this grinder we had a gehl and did a pretty good job.  Got rid of it because parts were next to impossible to find.  it ground very consistant smaller particle size but was not flour.  but from what im gathering is that is just the nature of the beast with the artsway grinder.

Owners manual suggests running a load of cobs or maybe ear corn after grinder has been sitting to scour up tank if bridging is an issue. Probably hard to come by nowadays. Maybe run a load of strictly corn thru it? I only do small loads for chickens but if I feed the corn faster I get more bigger chunks of corn but yes get more fines than I want. But my stuff is ancient tho hammers are pretty good.

do you think graphite paint in the bin cone would help the mixing issue.

Run unground shell corn through it if possible. I don’t know if you can shut your hammers off on an artsway, but that’s how I clean my farmhand

You're a member of the Farmhand grinder club too. What model is yours? F-81 C here.

817. Dad bought it new

Grandpa bought ours new in 63. Would really like a different one but the new ones are untouchable and the used ones are high priced. Looked at some New Holland 358s at a auction back in October and didn't get any of them.

I run a couple 352 new Holland's here.  Always struggle a little with that as well. Especially on dry corn. I sped up my drag auger, feed it heavy and keep rpms down as low as I can to where it still sounds good if that makes any sense. I run a 3/4 screen and that does a decent job. I run my feed into a portable bin so I'm always looking to make it courser so it flows better through them. Our other 352 the hammers are dull as **** and I think it's easier to make course feed. If your back side is dull it may be worth trying to flip them back to dull hammers. I know that's weird but I think it helps. Running pelletized corn gluten has helped some too opposed to ddg.

I use a 2" screen in my Gehl it helps but still a lot of powder.  When I bought a grinder that had set a long time and got rusty, I put on goggles and a dust mask and climbed inside with a hand grinder with a sanding disc and polished it up a little.
