IH 720 Plow Cylinder

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have the part numbers to a rebuild kit for this cylinder. The breather port is blowing oil which indicates seals gave out.
Also, maybe a bit of a tutorial on disassembly, repair & reassembly.
Thanks.

Don't have a rebuild kit number for you, but that is a standard ASAE 8" stroke cylinder so it may not be original.

In fact looking at the mycnhistore.com parts book it shows a two-way, tie rod type cylinder. It's definitely not original.

It may be less expensive to source a new cylinder than find the parts to have this one rebuilt. It looks a little wimpy for a plow tailwheel anyway. The plow would have a 3x8 or 3-1/2x8 tie rod type cylinder depending on how many bottoms it has:

Looks original to me My plow has the exact same cylinder that it came with

Does it settle when raised ? those cylinders will seep oil occasionally its normal . Unless you have to keep raising it when your transporting it I wouldn't worry about it . FYI rotate the end cap with the breather hole down so it doesn't spray oil out on top I do that to direct the oil spray down

Just go buy a 3x8 at your local ag supply. Will work just fine. You can make two way into one way. Just put a pipe plug in the down side and drill a 1/8-3/32 hole in in at a angle to keep rain water out of it. Will work just fine. Done this a few times or more. Cheaper than kits and labor and a lot quicker.

True I've done that before too if the cylinder is beyond repair but looking at that fellas cylinder unless it won't stay raised at all I highly doubt there's anything wrong with it.

Looks like an IH 3000 psi cylinder 390841R91 (1/2” pipe thread) or 381853R91 (7/8-14 thread).  Both take seal kit 386688R91.  The seal kit for the same style double acting cylinders is 386687R91 and would work with a few parts left over.  To disassemble, rotate the head and look into the slot on the side of the barrel at the head end.  You will see a square lock wire.  Rotate until you see the free end of the wire.  Pry it up, then reverse rotation to eject the lock wire and free the head for removal.  Brian

Be careful if you have to force the cylinder closed when you put it back on. The elbow may direct any oil in the cyl deep into you ear canal. Don't ask me how I know this, but the person involved was about 13 at the time

I have 4 different 720 plows and they all have that cylinder.  I would take it apart and take seals and or rings to a hydraulic shop and get them.   I bet less than $25 will fix you up.
