KY2674
My 15 year old and I are building a 70 Buick for his first car. Has some rust issues and replacing a few sheet metal parts. Cut out the rocker panel and coated the inside with por15 but when it's welded in there's no access to the back side of the welds. Any ideas on stopping rust from forming on the welds. Thanks, Frank
iowaboy1965
Iirc Eastwood used to have a coating to put down first i think on welded seems. Was claimed it was or mimics Detroit original process. Never used it so not sure how well or if it works. Have pondered your same problem.
lightninboy
Who'd want a 1970 Buick for a first car, unless it was a GS455?
IHC_1470
Makes pretty good since to me for a first car. I did a class D skills test yesterday and the 16 year old applicant came in driving a fairly new Dodge 3/4 ton diesel 4x4. The applicant was listed as a owner. You know the kid has little if any dog in that fight where as this 15 year old will have some great quality time with Dad and even if not a show car when they get done it will no doubt be something he will be proud of. When my youngest wanted his first car I was going to go find something for him. First mistake I did not ask him what he wanted. Long story short what he wanted and ended up with was a Toyota Celica with a blown engine and transmission which he paid to much for. Yet was the best investment we could have ever made. It gave us quality time together and he learned a lot about thinking through problems and consulting service manuals. In the end it was a car he took great care of because he knew if he broke it he was going to have to fix it.

jeeper61
Those Buick 455s have lots of grunt +500 Ft/lbs I would use a wax spray like LPS-3 spray or one of the undercarriage rust preventative oils
Kevingweq
Eastwood has a good product "Internal frame coating " It needs to be applied with the included hose and sprayer tip . You will need to drill small access holes that are easily capped . The picture is a wide open rocker on my T-all just to show how nice the applicator tip works ( I sprayed it blind through holes ) Eastwood Internal Frame Coating Aerosol Spray (14-oz.) PS love the choice of your Son's first ride and the Father Son idea !!! Best of Luck We need pics
IHC_1470
When I did the rear quarter panels a few years ago on the first car I bought new when I graduated from High School I was told to use seam sealer and just pore it along the bottom the best I could. Not sure just how much rust prevention it did, however it did run out in many places onto the ground so should help keep the dirt and dust out. You might check with a body shop and see what they suggest. I do believe Eastwood still cares the weld through primers. And the car; I am sure I will probably get laughed off here and that is OK. 1974 Ford Pinto. The electronics were great back then. Think the AM Philco radio probably was the extent of the electronics as it was the last year of points ignition. Probably one of the most trouble free cars I have ever owned. lightninboy
I'm just thinking like 40 years ago. A kid got to drive something like a Country Squire in "Better Off Dead" when the Camaro was the cool car.
hardtail
73 Ford Pinto was my first car, 88 rwhp wasn’t enough so I put a 289 and C4 in, was pretty quick for its era Kevin has it covered some guys use ATF applied annually
jeeper61
I have used the Eastwood Internal frame coating before I would still put some creeping sealer over that if the vehicle will be driven in the winter
Mr. Plow
The 76 Gremlin i drove in high school didn't have enough un-rusted metal in the frame rails to protect......so I filled them full of Great Stuff foam to keep them from carrying water from the front wheels back to the rear floorboards.....(had a few ice rinks back there in the winter before my Great Stuff hack). That was a rusted a$$ piece of ....... "dilapidated equipment", but it got me around, I could work on it, and it only cost me $300.

Bought it for $300 with a bad transmission. Bought a used transmission for $125 and I was riding. Tough little car.
KY2674
Thanks for the replies. It's a skylark with 350 Buick th350 and high gears. We're both on board with making it a 70s street machine; cragars, side pipes, hood scoop, and some kind of red white and blue paint job. (I sometimes think he was born 40 years too late!) Won't be real fast just trying to make it look fast on a really small budget. It's been a learning experience for him but he has always been a good worker taking care of most of the mowing and raking and running the dozer in the summertime. 12_Guy
Should be fun. The rebuild and the drive when finished.
vtfireman85
That’s great, i wonder how many original skylark owners thought 50 years later their card would be the coolest thing in the parking lot?
jingles1928
I'd drive it.
jeeper61
I like it other than the side pipes IMO Side pipes are ok on a vete or a hot rod. As with every project car it what the owner wants more power to him doing a good job so far!!! If you are going to have side pipes there needs to be some flames

We are rednecks here but flames may be a little too much? Besides I don't think I could paint flames myself, stripes maybe but not flames ? lightninboy
Ground clearance is low enough without sidepipes and front spoilers.
sandhiller
Hey you know what? If the kid wants side pipes he should have side pipes. His car right??? I think it will be a very sharp ride you can both be proud of. Congratulations on a very cool father son project.
lightninboy
The General Lee never had sidepipes. And for good reason. But, hey, I can dig a '70s street machine.

If he wants more power put more gear in it, can’t exactly recall the carrier breaks anymore, will cut down on speed also which might be a good thing I thinks it’s all great his vision, your doing this together will be remembered for a lifetime, basically a Buick chevelle, gotta have the right rake to it, not that they drove better actually worse but it was the 70’s❤️
IHKeith
Pretty cool, every opinion aside, I agree with the side pipes, he had the vision, do it, you have the pipes, it can be changed, if he doesn’t do it now he probably never will, and whether it wears the side pipes 6 weeks or 6 years, you can always go back to typical exhaust, the fact you have the side pipes and the desire is the classic why not, if down the line they are too much I’m sure they will be a great memory, my experience with old cars is the most important thing to do with them is drive, drive the piss out of it, everywhere, never pass a gas station hahaha ?
