Finally pulled the trigger on 856

Thanks for all the replies and help with answering questions about narrowing down a tractor for me. I bought this 856 out of Ohio. Got it home last week, everything that I have tried seems to work good on it. Front end seems tight, runs a touch over 50 psi on the oil pressure. It’s not starting the best the block heater is burned out. Just a whiff of ether and it pops right off though. I replaced fuel filters and put some injector cleaned in the tank.

thanks Nick

Very nice looking tractor.   Likely had the fenders added, as it still has the "no fender" lights on the tank.   My 806 never did start w/o a shot of ether - even in mid summer.   Thats just the nature of that motor I think.

Thanks, it started the day it got delivered but it was pretty warm out, around 50 If I remember right but took a fair amount of cranking. Hopefully it will start good without ether if it’s above 50 degrees. Does anyone else with one think the hard starting is normal or is something not quite right? It fires up great after the initial start.

They usually start good.   Have one at farm with 9000 hours.  Above 50 not sure if rolls over twice and is running.    Check pump timing,  seems to make a big difference.   Looks different to me with the white radiator panels.   What are the lines running on the top of left frame rail???

Okay I will check the pump timing. I agree I am not a fan of the white lower panels at all. I’m not sure what the lines are for I just figured they were standard I haven’t paid much attention honestly.

The lines on the frame rail look like replacement steering lines?! Someone went the easy way to fix, not the proper.
I agree with Nate about the starting, I just got the 856 I grew up on, back this last spring, 10,413 hours on a working tach, and 30 degrees a few weeks back, it fired up after 3-4 revolutions in the shed, no ether!!

I think it looks great too.

May need to just learn where it likes to have the throttle lever positioned for starting. Some like Full Throttle, some don’t. If it doesn’t start after cranking for 5-6 sec, Stop, let it sit for 10-20 sec. (this lets a bit of heat soak into the cylinders), then try it again.

Looks nice, however I do have a question-a-moon-doh...... It doesn’t appear to have any steps on either side???? How pray tell do you climb up on that thing? That is weird.

Lol it had this huge homemade stair set on it when I got it. It had to go, I had just finished taking it off. New original step came yesterday. If anyone is interested it is very practical and built stout.

An 856 custom will have CU stamped on the serial number tag.   The air filters can be changed, second hydraulic valve added.   The smaller fuel tank on a custom is the biggest clue.  Most people did not bother to swap for the larger one.

Ya it just has 856 D on the tag. A custom is less desirable I am guessing?

In a collectors world actually a little bit more collectable in my opinion. As they are lower production. Around 2500 856 Customs and 900 756 Customs if I remember correctly.

Congrats on the purchase! The 856 is one of the best models of IH ever built.
