Around the Beaufighter

One of our gliding instructors was RAF Battle of Britain onwards.

He had a story of a WAAF who couldn't understand why the nickname she had been given was Beaufighter.

She "carried a lot of cargo on the top deck" and the Beaufighter was one aeroplane where the prop bosses are ahead of the nose.

back in the late 80's, Texas started the anti-litter campaign "Don't Mess With Texas". This was one of the first ads they made. They used a B-17 from the CAF. They also filmed a P-51 and a Hellcat but didn't used them in the commercial. Story goes that the film director said to the B-17 pilot "Get as close to the camera as you can." looking at the pics he got pretty damn close.

There is a Flickr page of Chicago Midway Airport photos going back to the 1920s.  Lots of pictures of what air travel used to look like.    https://www.flickr.com/photos/twa1049g/page1

You can scroll through the photostream and when you see something of interest, clicking on it will bring up a larger version often with a description of what it is.

I've been watching videos showing Pan American's Trans-Pacific travel via their flying boats, San Francisco-Honolulu, Midway Island, Wake Island, Guam, Manila, Macau, (later Hong Kong)  (Or, for us round eyes, Honky Kong)

Like traveling by train, during the Golden Age of Rail, air travel, up until perhaps the age of the 747, was something 'special', and, though somewhat prejudiced, Pan Am, still retained some vestiges of their past, when I rode with them, back and forth, to Japan and China.

Northwest was a close second to Pan-Am, while American, was, and probably remains, the ALL-time worst, with BA a far distant second.

German 20mm cannon vs. U.S. bombers.  Neat, factual video.

Those bomber crews got shot up pretty bad.  Here's some gun cam footage from the fighters.

...a De Haviland Vampire jet aircraft ..on its last run..on the back of a truck..to an aviation   museum in the South Island of NZ

The Royal New  ZealandAir Force brought   15 Vampires in 1951   .....decommissioned   1n 1972

My Dad  , when the Korean    War started   , promptly re-enlisted  and got 'trained -up   '' on P51 .s and Vampire 's...but was never called  up ..for active service ....He told   Mum   that it was a "'Refresher   Course ""...which was a slight distortion of the reality  of the situation,,,,This all came out after Dad was 'taken out '' ....and we studied his log books ..and saw what really transpired.....:)

I decided to make a separate thread since this wasn't related to any particular aircraft.

Pure insanity

Take the same mentality as a tunnel rat in Nam.
