been waiting 30 years for this call

Recommended Posts

I got a call from a fellow dairy farmer. His Dad and uncle had a 460 high utility that they bought new. It was the first 6 cyl, first power steering tractor I ever drove. After we moved 7 miles to the bigger farm in 1958, we still did the hay at the old farm, where my grandparents lived. All Dad had for a side rake was an old David Bradley hay beater, that whipped all over the road if you went more than 6 mph (maybe even 5?). He borrowed a NH #90 pto rake from the next door neighbors, and the 460 was hooked to it. For a 11 or 12 year old whose job was raking, it was quite a deal! I asked the owner that if he ever wanted to sell it, give me first chance. He was going to fix it up, even had an uncle rebuild the engine. The 460 has been sitting for a long time, with the wiring burned off it. I made an offer a couple years ago, but no dice. This morning, the phone rang and Steve said to come and get it. That is tomorrow's job.

Now if I could find a #90 rake, I could help Tony with his new hay business.?

Throw a picture on here when you get it.  I take it they are hard to come by???  As much as I don't care for utility tractors, I've kind of had a thing for big row crop tractors that were turned into utilities such as the 460 or on the green side 3020/4000.

Congratulations Bill, glad you finally got it! Will this be your second 460 Hi-Utility?

Mostly, I just wanted that particular tractor. From my info archives, there were only 271 gas, 77 diesel, and 13 LP 460 high utilities made. (CNKS)

no, the first. But I have parts 460 regular utility and a parts Farmall 460 that may have some parts if I need them to get the new one going.

I have a 350 high utility, and 2 656 hi utilities. The 656 with the white front rims is one Dad bought new. The 460 goes nicely with the set.

Ahh ok it was the 350 I was thinking of, I knew you had a couple of Hi-Utilities. That will make a very nice addition.

Always nice to get a sentimental tractor in the shed

Our 656 is similar if not the same set up as yours. But is badged as a Row Crop. We are the second owners and it's all original still

Whats a high utility?

this one was at the 2013 RPRU in Ohio. Take a normal utility with the swept back front axle, put on longer front spindles and Farmall/bar axles/ 38" tires on the back instead of stamped rear rims and the usual bolt on 30" back wheels. More clearance with a shorter wheelbase.

my gear drive 656 says hi clear below the numbers. the hydro says row crop above the numbers. a little bit of trivia.

So what is the one you are getting?  Assuming gasoline, but just curious.

the fenders came off their 756 custom that has a Y-A-R cab. It needs a rear rim and tire, and seat. came with a FH to 3pt adapter. The paint is pretty nice for the age, not sure if it has been repainted sometime or not. Wiring has been burned, so it needs that. I am psyched! 3 other winter projects got demoted with this one. I have a parts 460 utility that will donate correct fenders.
