1486 cab upgrades

Recommended Posts

Been wanting to get new interior in the 1486 since we brought it back home. This one came with the western interior when we bought it new so I wanted it to be exactly original. Got all new upholstery around and back of the seat and firewall, was able to find the original sears deluxe seat to put in, found the original door pockets that open out, and finally a new brown floor mat. Would like to have had the original floor mat/carpet that was in it but no luck with that. A new headliner will be put in next year along with hopefully a paint job. But for now I’m very happy with the outcome and it’s looking more like it did back in 1980.

Where did you find the seat? Are they replacement cushions? Looks great!

Thank you! Yes those are replacement cushions. Jensales tractor parts had the seat. You could buy the whole seat or just the individual pieces if that’s all you’d need. I spent a lot of time looking for that seat as I knew it wasn’t just the regular seat that was in there. Just happened to be looking through their items and there it was! They also carry the correct seat for the burgundy interior as well.

So alittle up date with this. There was a few wrinkles in the material after it was installed and didn’t like that so I bought a steamer at Walmart and what a difference that made. Smoothed it right out and looks even better. Added the one missing door panel as well. Also rebuilt the cylinder in the hydraulic seat while it was out so hopefully that’ll last another 40 years lol.

That sure looks good! You wanna come and do 2 more 14's? Lol. I like the western interior the best. Grew up riding behind the seat in the 3788 with that same style. Anyway, good job!

Thank you! I’m pretty happy with how it turned out overall. This was the first cab interior  that I have ever done so it was a learning experience lol. And sure I’d be game lol! I do too. I think they looked the best out of all of the options. My uncles 14 has just the plain black interior and a neighbor has the burgundy, both are nice but the western is by far the best looking imo. And thanks again!

I gotta do our 14 already. The headliner is falling down and nothing left of the sides and back. Then we bought another 14 and it needs seat and sides too lol. But it needs reverse gear so gonna focus on that first lol. Then I can goin the nice interior club lol. Never done a cab interior yet either so it'll be a learning experience too! Both these are the black interior which I will probaly stick with but the western is just so darn nice! Again, nice work!

Yeah this one is going to get a new headliner but I’ll probably wait to do that until closer to spring and then everything will be done on the interior. Hoping next summer to do a paint job. Yeah gotta Take care of the mechanical side of things first and then cosmetics later! And I definitely agree the western design is by far the nicest of them all! Thanks again!

K&M products used to send a gentleman down to my work to measure cabs for research and development of new products.   He would often bring along prototypes of a new item and test fit them on machines or cabs as well. Many replacement parts for Magnums and JD 6000-8000 series tractors were developed with his efforts.

He told me that they were working on a carpet with the molded heel pad for the 86 series International tractors.  He promised me that he would bring me one from the test batch and let me try it in my 1486 for durability.   He later left K&M, I think he was overworked and stressed.  I have never seen or heard about the carpet since.  That project may have been scrapped.   Too bad. At one time,  they planned to produce every plastic piece in a Magnum cab, but nothing new has hit the market recently.   He showed me a prototype of the black plastic corners below the cab where the work lights mount.  I hope they produce them, lots of demand.

I would definitely agree on lots of demand for that. I know numerous guys that would like to get that carpet/heel pad floor mat. Maybe if we start a petition to make them they would see the demand for them? Lol
