1946 T-6 Crawler

Some images to understand the extent of fender repair required.

The first image shows the as acquired. You can see the fenders wet cutoff at the end of the seat base. It was done to accommodate a home built dozer that was scrapped years ago.

The second picture shows the left over bit of fender after I had removed the last 5 1/2 inches or so to weld onto the fenders we had found off a orchard version T-6 that had had the back end cut off.

The third picture shows the original cutoff end you can see was just torched off.

The final photo shows the fenders in primer. Next photos of the fenders will show them red and installed likely.

These few photos do not show the labour it took to get them straight and fixed. I cannot find my photos of the orchard fenders, but no matter. I was able to beat the back 5 or so inches straight on the original…that was all we could use. Fortunately those 5 inches were enough to rebuild the parts fenders we bought into the appropriate fenders for this tractor. The lips on the backs of both fenders were squashed nearly flat on the original pair, it took lots of heavy hammer work. We are pleased with the result.

First that I ran across this project. Really nice work.

We had a TD-6 on the farm I grew up on. Got it in 1953, after they stopped using the TracTractor name. Mostly for pulling a four row potato planter but sometimes for disking. It had the farm grade bulldozer blade that made it easy to fill in washouts, back drag the farm roads to level them out, dig out rocks or give a little push to the back of the flatbed trucks that were loaded with bags of potatoes (that had been picked up by hand before the days of potato harvesters) when the field had gotten slippery. And there were plenty of times it cleared snow.

I remember when, as a young boy, my father would take me with him to the field and let me ride on the crawler with him. I would be sitting with my legs in front of me on the platform to the left of the seat, safely tucked in between that and the steel hydraulic lines that surrounded the operator’s platform.

After 1974 we were out of the potato business, but as one might guess, the TD-6 was not going anywhere. I remember my father telling someone that it wasn’t used very much anymore but he would never part with it. And he did keep it until the end when he had his farm equipment auction when he retired in 2007.

Nice left rear view. Rear lamp installed and the original owner’s toolbox. We don’t think it is the factory box. However the box was there a long time and is a tip of the hat to the original owner.

The pink flag is to remind us to install the track pin when we get it rotated to a spot where one can actually get it in.

a very nice job, hats off to you! that tool box is the same as the 60 series tractors have, like the 560's and 660's.

Thought it might be something later, but we felt that since it came directly from the original owners family, it was one thing that could stand in that owner's memory.

That style box is what Cat used from the 30's until about 1960. I don't know if they made the boxes they used or bought them. I know they had 2 sizes, bigger tractor and fender, a longer box.

Had it out for a test drive Thursday . Hood off while we make sure all the adjustments and such under it are correct. Could hear a little valve clatter today. The other day it was warmed up and head bolts re-torqued. Runs beautifully. Steers great. Clutch works perfect. Very happy with it.

Awesome it’s come together very nicely and showcases all the hard work that you have put into it.  Maybe get a chance to see it on display if I get back out that way again one of these days.  Been almost 20 years already since I was last there.

Final decals installed. Next photos will be of the completed tractor in its display space for the summer, coming out for the annual machine show on the Labour Day Weekend. The decals are installed as original and are one half an inch forward of center on the hood.
