Getting parts together to pull 1000 pto and convert to dual speed. My 5488 is sn 4396. I have the idler shaft and gear from a 706. Abilene machine has a picture of their conversion kit, it shows an idler shaft that steps up in diameter, not all one size like 706. Will my 706 idler shaft & gears work? I ordered new 540 & 1000 shafts from a&i. ( my 706 pto was off a '63, had short shafts )amx59104_ka_1k_1_kindlephoto-26825001.jpg.b0a392d2621fb754b935dd72d3ed357e.jpg

According to CNH parts books, yes both tractors use the following parts. I wonder if picture maybe isn't showing the needle bearings slid unto idler shaft. The center needle is the one that supports front end of 540 shaft in main pto housing, the other 2 go in 540 gear.

381509R1 gear

Thanks. I think we have the right parts on hand when we tear it down. That picture made me unsure.

you might ask around on those shafts from A&I; the hardness has been an issue in the past. not sure if they ever corrected it.

I have had trouble with aftermarket shafts due to gear and spline hardness and bearings traveling I use the cover but go with oem  shafts I would trust a idler gear out of a 706 way before an aftermarket gear I have to admit I warrantied a couple of jobs before I wised up
