Scotch

In another thread that was going way off the rails the subject of a good single malt came up, so I decided a thread dedicated to good spirits was required.

My favorite, Lagavulin 16, has just price increased to ludicrous at $92.  from what had bee merely ridiculously expensive at high 60s. A lot of the price is due new tariffs but perhaps we're drinking more?.

Searching around for a good smooth Islay Scotch  I found this and can attest both to it's smoothness and merely expensive $57. price.

Some of my partners at work tried to educate me on Scotch at one of our Christmas parties. They gave me Laphroaig and all I can say is that it tastes like 30 lb building felt that has been left out in the sun smells!  It kind of has a tarry taste, at least to me. I guess I just have an uncultured palet!

I guess I’m EL Cheapo then. This is my go to when I need a snort, like for medicinal purposes, or a pick me up, or what ever. ha ha.

Evan Williams Kentucky Bourbon Whiskey. Only about $18.00 a bottle. Lol

not really,   bourbon is by and large sweeter than scotch,   but, if you havent had scotch and try something peaty like New Englander posted I think itll probably taste like a punch in the mouth.

Its alot like coffee and tea i think,   different roasts,  add in creame or sugar or honey or take it straight?

lots of sophisticated bourbon drinkers out there,  and sometimes a punch in the mouth makes you see things differently even in things you thought you like but now like even more.

Thats the best part about sharing samples and tastes with food or drink "In this case scotch"   its just kind of interesting.

I drink coke zero too,  wonder if its not worse for me than the occasional whiskey?  the point is,  whiskey isnt about about finding an influence to get by, its just something to be enjoyed in moderation and responsibly just like an ice cold coke zero on a hot day.   and IMO diet dr pepper is the ONLY way to go.

I enjoy a good scotch every once in a while. Usually scotch & water or on the rocks. Was in a lower class bar one night and ordered a scotch & water. The barmaid looked at me and said, “The only people that order scotch are either rich people or alcoholics. Which one are you?”

I said, “Honey, I ain’t rich.” ?

Have some experience w/ the alcohol molecule but if you're talking Scotch, and I've tried a few, you'd better put a "Butter" in front of it.

Coke Zero has caffine doesn't it?  If you don't need outside influences you should just be drinking water.  ?

I don't think I've ever tried scotch.  I've tried bourbon, Crown Royal, Jim Beam, that type of thing and just never been a fan.

So I just call bourbon "whiskey" which I know isn't correct.  Can someone educate me, bourbon is just grain whiskey that is aged in barrels that give it the color and flavor?  Is that correct?  So how is scotch different from bourbon?

Bourbon is made from a mostly corn mash. Single malt Scotch is made from malted barley. The heavily peated  Islay scotches have the grain dried over a peat fire contributing to the slightly smoky flavor.

Here's a pretty good explanation of Scotch in general: https://whiskyanalysis.com/index.php/background/scotch-style-whiskies-single-malts-vs-blends/

I'm no connoisseur but I have found that in whisky and wine you get what you pay for up to a point. After a certain price point I think you have to have more discerning taste buds than I possess.?

Pretty sure it is peat moss added to the process

Milk straight from the tank , chocolate syrup from the bottle. I figured someone would probably pick on my milk color.

Chocolate milk matters

Ha, ha! No, no peat moss added to the process but some have the barley dried over a peat fire, which is like a coal fire. In fact peat, under the right conditions,  will turn into coal. It's not exactly the same as peat moss but bog plants that over the centuries have turned into what looks like a heavy brown soil. It's dried and burned as a fuel in Ireland and Scotland and a few other places where it occurs.
